Since I went to school in Macon and a lot of my friends still live there it wasn't long before I found out about this. The Superintendent of Bibb County Schools has made it mandatory that all student become proficient in
Mandarin by the time they finish high school. This has fueled a lot of debate because many students in the county are from a low socioeconomic background and many believe that focusing more on academics or even Spanish would be more appropriate.

I was thinking about the article that we read, All Children Can Learn, and effective teaching. Many believe that these waivers help stop "teaching to the test". I wonder what happens once more states get waivers...will the stagnation in learning that we saw in the powerpoints change?

The HCZ is led by its President & CEO Geoffrey Canada. They have a pipeline to help all students in the 24-hour block of Harlem, NY. All of the children served in this area are at a socioeconomic disadvantage. By the time they get to high school/college are the first in their family to go. The HCZ has several charter schools for its students.
