Keeping in trend with the current economic status, New York City schools are facing a 5% budget cut that will most likely effect much-needed after school and weekend programs. Although budgeting for the upcoming year has aided the children of low income families, it's still heartbreaking to see that these programs will be cut in favor of saving money... especially when they are probably the most important and needed.

Making six-figure salaries and hailing from various walks of life all over the nation, the aim of this school is to prove that teachers hold the key in improving individual student performance and instilling a thirst for knowledge in pupils. The school will cater to low performing students mostly of low-income Hispanic families, and the teachers will have additional responsibilities on top of being in the classroom.

Report Says Success at New York City's Small Schools Has a Price - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
New York City has been replacing its larger 'trouble' schools with smaller schools with themes like environmental science and performing arts. Instead of focusing on the problems at the larger schools, they are shut down so smaller ones can open. The program has had success but it isn't doing much for the overall program. The high schools who were poor performing are still having problems (low attendance, grad rates); but it appears as if the smaller school trend is on the rise.

For Colleges, Small Cuts Add Up to Big Savings - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
This New York Times article describes how several colleges and universities around the nation are minimizing costs due to the current economic crisis. Schools like Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and Bryn Mawr College are holding virtual swim meets to save on travel expenses, while other schools are cutting custodial and other staff positions in an effort to save money. Giving students the opportunity to gain work experience by taking on professional staff positions has saved Rhodes College almost $750,000. Although many schools are doing their part to save money, in several cases it has turned out to be beneficial for students and has eliminated unnecessary costs and expenses for many colleges and universities.

NYC public school students showed increases in their math scores this year. Some say they show great increases and are reasons that the school should stay in the control of the mayor. Others argue that the improved scores are misleading - educators are getting used to the testing and know what to expect and they are thinking of raising the scores.

Harlem Success Academy Prepares for Tests at Queens Farm Museum - NYTimes.com - 1 views

  • New York State’s English and math exams include several questions each year about livestock, crops and the other staples of the rural experience that some educators say flummox city children, whose knowledge of nature might begin and end at Central Park

Professory Cooke once told a story about teaching students in the rural West. When asked where they were most likely to see a yacht, the students did not choose lake or ocean, but highway. They lived in a town through which many yachts were moved on flat-bed trucks between the summer and winter homes of their owners. So, given the life experiences of the students, this was the correct answer.... but not the one that the test-makers were going to count as correct.
