#1 Mary Ann Simpson on 07 Feb 11This is the title of an article in today's Seattle Times (2/7) in the NW MONDAY section B-1. Basically, it is about a proposed plan to partner Washington State with WGU (Western Governors University) which is located in Utah. If adopted, the "plan would expand a nonprofit online university in Washington as a way to increase access to higher education." It is a thought-provoking read that has implications for all of us aspiring to become online educators.

#6 Bruce Wolcott on 08 Feb 11Thanks for posting this, Mary Ann and Joy... I just hope that we don't all end up teaching only online courses - or worse... being replaced by next-Gen forms of fully automated artificial intelligence instructors :)

#7 Joy LaJeret on 08 Feb 11Well the wave of the future is part time instructors without full time benefits. Shhh...don't give 'em any ideas!

#8 ann stephens on 08 Feb 11This scenario - to augment access to education by on-line learning - has some merits, but as with many things the devil is in the details. And in reading this, there are so many details to understand. Does each university that has transfer credits get to set their standards, for example? I thought it was interesting that WGU - who would be offering these courses - was a private company founded by former politicians. Although I philosophically like this idea, it raises a flag about whether this is a money-making propostion for some people.

#9 Joy LaJeret on 10 Feb 11Good point Ann. Looking where the money stops often tells the whole story. As Pol Sci major you can guess what I think of politicians handling anything to do with non--profit education or public to be exact.
