Session 4: The Technology Penalty - 35 views

I had a technology penalty that I will never forget. I see no point to using the interwrite tablets. The one tine I did try to use it, it did not work right and then it disconnected. I found it to be much easier to just use a tansparency. Or get an image of the work sheet, lift up the screen and write on the board. I was prepared the way I am always prepared when it comes to using new technology - they end up doing book work when all else fails.

Is this something I should know? As I sit here typing this, I have absolutely no idea what Baltimore County's vision is for technology integration. The only technology I use, I haved learned from other teachers. I also find that teachers are usually hesitant to try something out at first because they are worried about how it will actually work in the class. But, I have to repeat a previous - it is hard to integrate technology when I don't teach in a computer lab and the computers I do have access to don't always work. However, if you do want to integrate technology more you need to change the curriculum and make it more technology based.

using the voice threads allows students to take control and be responsible for their own learning. they would be using technology they that are not used to having in the classroom - however these are skills that they have already developed. if you make students do a voice thread on a topic, they are then forced to become the "teachers". they are accountable for what they produce. i don't think they feel the same way when they write a paper, however, if they can post something that they know other people will see, i think they would put more effort into making a good product.

I agree with everything Prensky said. And I will admit i am a digital immagrant. my problem is in the classroom, i am used to doing things in an "old school" fashion. its not because its what i'm used to, it deals more with the fact that the technology isn't always reliable. to me that is what always messes up my lesson plan. my inter-write tablet doesn't always work - for me it is just easier to put up a transparancy and have the kids write on that. these lessons sound like a good idea, except for the fact that i don't teach in a computer lab. perhaps that is what really needs to change.
