Review this definition: What is Web 2.0?

Browse some of the Web 2.0 tools posted on the Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Library and Information Services "Web 2.0 Resource Wiki" here. These should be OK to use in school.

Also check out a few of the Web 2.0 tools posted on this Resource page. There is no guarantee that these will work in school, so it would be necessary to test them before trying them out with students!

Create a new comment below listing three Web 2.0 tools which you feel would be a "good fit" with your students' grade level, your content area, and your pedagogy. Next to each, note whether they are "Webfilter OK" or whether they are "Blocked" and would need to be put through the BCPS Web Resources Approval Process.

I use some of the videos in Safari Montage--especially the one on Conflict Resolution, Ethics, Unions, and Labor Laws. I have also used Wordle for vocabulary words review at the end of units or as a review at the end of the year--it makes the students look for words they need to review for the test. I allow the students to use Wikipedia to begin their research, however they need to back up this information with additional research due to the fact that it is in real time and the information can be modified at any point in time by who ever.

I have used the following Web 2.0 tools in my classroom. None of which are blocked by BCPS.
    1. Animoto ~ I used this as motivator when introducing out unit on Rocks and Fossils.
    2. Make Beliefs Comix ~ I used this tool to reinforce content on the rock cycle. The students had to create two characters. Each character represented a different type of rock. The dialogue had to demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of the rocks and how the rocks change from one form to another.
    3. Show Beyond ~ I used this tool to create a slide show with music and dialogue about the various types of fossils as an introduction to a unit and then again as a review at the end of the unit.
I have also used: Wordle, Prezi, Voicethread, Voki, and a few more. For now I most comfortable with the ones I have mentioned here, but I am still learning how to use many other Web 2.0 tools or at least I am attempting to become familiar with them.

Web 2.0 is a digital resource to access reliable educational sites for use in the classroom. It has many sources but a significant number of them are on the Baltimore County School website for easy access for teachers, students and parents. Safari Montage is used in the classroom and covers a number of topics for use. Net Trek access curricular materials and provides access to a screen reader for written materials. If you want access to many useful web sites all that is necessary for many useable sites is the STUDENT part of the Baltimore County web site and it is supportive of all curricular areas at all levels of instruction and at all grade levels. Net Trek, Brain Pop data base, Franklin Spellers. We really need to explore what the county has made available to the students for our own use.

I agree with Maragaret. We really do need to use what BCPS has provided us and the students to use. They have spent the money for these supports and we don't want to lose them because we (teachers and students) are not using them.

I would use the following web 2.0 tools in the classroom...None of these tools are blocked by the BCPS server

    1. Safari Montage - In Social Studies, videos can be a great tool in explaining topic to the students. They are motivating, easy to use, and in Safari, they frequently give lesson plans, teacher guides, and quizes for the students. Since I have to cover 2000+ years in my World History class, Safari is great to use!

    2. Google Earth - I would use Google Earth to show the students the real life in different areas of the world. Although it requires a download, it works in school. In World History, I would have the students focus on the country/region that we are studying and they could research landmarks, historical areas, tourist attractions, locations of historical events, etc. to compare with the historical time we are teaching. In AP Human Geography, students can reasearch a country and find geographic places, landmarks, cultural landscapes of the country or region for a project and apply geographic principles to them.

    3. Inspiration - can be used to create a timeline of event in World History, or be used to outline their topics of a research project. In Human Geography it could also be used to outline a research project.

I can see using the following web 2.0 tools in the classroom.

    1. Safari Montage: There are quite a few math videos available that teachers can use to aid in their instruction. I have used quite a few in my classes and they provide alternative explanations which can beneficial if students are having problems understanding a concept.

    2. Promethean Flipcharts: These flipcharts allow teachers to demonstrate concepts by moving figures around and creating images that cannot as easily be done in Microsoft Word.

    3. Graphsy: This tool would allow students to create graphs online instead of doing it the traditional way using paper and pencil.

There are many Web 2.0 tools I can use in my science classroom.

Safari Montage has many videos that relate to physics and earth space science. Some are basic and explain concepts, while others help students relate science to the real world.

Graphsy is a tool that is very useful in physics fro creating online graphs. I often have students hand graph their data and then compare it to a graph the create online or using LoggerPro.

I use Brain Pops often as a transition or review. During the 90 minute blocks, these help to break up the time.

Google Earth is very useful when dealing with biomes, climates, global winds, etc.

I want to try Make Beliefs Comix. I think this will be a very help tool especially with differentiation.

I have used many Web 2.0 tools in my classroom
*Safari Montage has many videos that relate to technology, engineering and sciences. They supply information and view that can not be given out of a textbook or other media.
*Another one not even on the list is Google Sketch-Up that gives my students an introduction to 3-D modeling and architecture.
*Google Sketch-Up then plays into teaching the student how to use Google earth in modeling the earth projects that Google has in linking the two software packages together.

The negative is that BCPS does not allow us to download the latest version which does not give us the full power of web 2.0 software.

I constantly use BrainPop as an introduction to a topic. The worksheets and short quizzes are a fast way to assess my students knowledge of what they have seen. Also the students love the extra information that BrainPop provides about everyday items.

Safari Montage is such a great tool to extent the curriculum.

I use Safari Montage to introduce topics, using the guided notes and practice problems that are part of the Algebra 's cool series..
I am lesson planning in promethean flipcharts everyday. The students can move things around to group or make list. I think it is much more visual than anything else I have tried to master.
I know that MPT education site has some interesting math supplements but I have not yet investigated them.
There are some good math lesson on youtube which I downloaded but they did not show up well in school. The originals was much better.

Forvo is a tool I could use in International Finance when students study the economy of a country. They could use this tooll to learn how to say a few statements related to the culture and/or business operations. I think students will be engaged and enjoy this unblocked site.

Typing web is anorther tool that could be used in instruction. This tool alows studnents to learn how to type which could be used as a practice tool at home or as a instructional tool in a Keyboarding class. This tool would be included with others which will allow students to choose a method that will allow them to be successful. The site offers lessons, games, and tips to help students improve that are easy to access at school or home without any filters.

Quizantor is another tool that could be used for me to improve instruction. This allows an educator to create worksheets and not save them to a flash drive because it is stored in cyberspace. This is compatible to google docs. Some parts of this site will need county approval to be unblocked.
