That's the reason we keep coming back for more, that's why so many of us spend more time building and giving presentations than almost anything else we do. Here are some steps to achieve this level of PPT nirvana (Your mileage may vary. These are steps, not rules):

This is the One for stock Android lovers. - 0 views

"Handset makers and wireless carriers love to load up Google's Android platform with custom overlays, user interface tweaks, and third-party programs that don't ship natively with the open source operating system. That's great for them, but most power users would prefer a clean version of Android to work with, which is why the third-party ROM community is popular. Well, following in the footsteps of Samsung and it's custom S4 that was announced at Google I/O, HTC is reportedly kicking around the idea of offering a Google Edition of its One smartphone. News of the custom HTC One comes from Russell Holly over at Geek.com. Citing un-named sources, Holly says the Google Edition device would be offered in the U.S. first, though it's unclear if it would be carried in the Play Store like the Galaxy S4 will be. Other details are equally light and vague, though Holly claims an official announcement could come within the next two weeks, with a release likely planned for sometime this summer." Why I Returned My iPad - Peter Bregman - Harvard Business Review - 25 views

"Boredom. Being bored is a precious thing, a state of mind we should pursue. Once boredom sets in, our minds begin to wander, looking for something exciting, something interesting to land on. And that's where creativity arises." (Bregman, 2010.06.16)

Kindle, schmindle...I've got your $350 e-book reader right here | Digital City Podcast ... - 0 views

  • With all the buzz about Amazon's new Kindle 2, you'd think this revamped e-book reader was the most advanced piece of technology this side of designer babies. After all, for $359, you get a color screen, Wi-Fi and Web browsing, video playback, 60GB of storage, and a reasonably usable keyboard.
  • Not only is there a wide range of PC software available for buying and displaying e-books (and tons of free content as well), when you're done with all that highbrow readin', pop open a Web browser and rot your brain with some Hulu videos.

No, that's what $350 can get you if invested in even a low-end Netbook, such as the new 10-inch Acer Aspire One. Advantages of UX Research & Why Startups Are Scared to Invest In The Same - PegaLogics - 0 views

  •
UX Research is researching and analyzing the target audience. Comprehending their behavioral habits, knowledge, dealings, and emotion towards your property and the mindset they come with when borrowing the product. According to a current study, India discerns about 50,000 new start-ups per year. An average of 2-3 start-ups is assumed every day, and yet India sees only a 10% success ratio. While one may or may not be familiar with difficulties that direct to that, one thing start-ups can evaluate is the Users' experience. If the user successfully utilizes the product, which improves the users' life, generally, there will be an increase in the pressure for such products, hence earning it highly controversial that the commodity or brand will cease to function. So, if that's the possibility, why do start-ups shy off from UX research? Or, what are the beliefs of UX Research that blur the senses of new entrepreneurs today? And how it results in further destruction than reasonable.

Zoho upgrades Web word processor with good UI (two of them!) | Webware - CNET - 0 views

  • Zoho is improving its online word processor, Writer, with a revised user interface and a few new useful features. The interface change is a have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too experiment. The new "MenuTab" UI gives you drop-down choices from the top level of the menu, but you can also press on a top-level menu choice to display an icon bar with identical options. The icon bar is nothing like Micrsoft Office 2007's tab bar, which supports many more options and has more complicated different ways to use it.
  • I find Zoho Writer 2.0 to be a strong word processor that's incredibly easy to learn and use, even more so than Google Docs. The dangerous collaboration function means I can't recommend this product, yet, as a workgroup app. But I wrote this review solo in Zoho, and it didn't give me a minute of confusion or trouble.

  • You post directly to a few different blogging services from Zoho Writer, which is a very nice feature for bloggers.
  • Zoho is said to offer simultaneous collaborative editing, as Google Docs does, but when I tested the app I found it far too easy to over-write another user's edits. I do hope this gets fixed very soon.

  • the online portfolios of who we are, what we do, and by association, what we know—are becoming increasingly woven into the fabric of almost every aspect of our lives
  • They're creating all sorts of content—some, as we all know, doing so very badly—and they're doing all sorts of things with online tools that, for the most part, we're not teaching them anything about. In the process, they're becoming Googleable without us. By and large, they do all this creating, publishing, and learning on their own, outside school, because when they enter the classroom, they typically "turn off the lights"
  • these shifts demand that we move our concept of learning from a "supply-push" model of "building up an inventory of knowledge in the students' heads" (p. 30) to a "demand-pull" approach that requires students to own their learning processes and pursue learning, based on their needs of the moment, in social and possibly global communities of practice.

Pearson Presents: Learning to Change - Practical Theory - 0 views

  • I remain very, very concerned with the notion that all we have to do is let the kids connect with the world -- just like they do on Facebook or MySpace -- and the kids will learn. There's a fallacy there, and my experience with how much really deep teaching of digital ethics we've had to do at SLA to counter all that the kids come in the door thinking about the digital world.
  • is there much of an honest discussion of just how hard implementation of these ideas actually is.
  • And the problem is that our entire structure has to change to make it easier. You can't teach 150 kids a day this way... you can't have traditional credit hours... you have to find new ways to look at your classroom. Everything from school design to teacher contracts to class size and teacher load to curriculum and assessment -- everything we do in schools -- has to be on the table for change if we are to achieve the kind of schools that video is speaking about. The only thing that shouldn't be on the table, and that the video actually hints that it should be, is the need for teachers in their day to day lives-- the adults who can make a deep profound impact in kids' lives.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Because nowhere in that talk
  • "If we just change it all up, the kids will all suddenly just start learning like crazy" when that misses several points -- 1) we still have an insanely anti-intellectual culture that is so much more powerful than schools. 2) Deep learning is still hard, and our culture is moving away from valuing things that are hard to do. 3) We still need teachers to teach kids thoughtfulness, wisdom, care, compassion, and there's an anti-teacher rhetoric that, to me, undermines that video's message.
  • We cannot pretend these ideas "save" our schools, they create different schools -- better ones, I believe -- but very, very different ones, and that's the piece I see missing.
  •

Apple, others draw legal threat over media players | CNET News.com - 0 views

  • RealNetworks spokesman Matt Graves said he hadn't yet seen the letter, but it appeared to be a ploy by a "desperate company" to get its product licensed. "That's a rather novel approach to business development," he said in an e-mail interview Friday. Representatives from Apple, Microsoft, Adobe and MRT did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

  • Way too many students think of an agenda or a planner as synonymous with a to-do list. It doesn't make any sense to write a new assignment down on a planner under a date—that's deadline-oriented thinking that just begs for procrastination.

I do the same thing. By putting it on a calendar, it tells me that I don't have to think about till then....

  • Instead, just reserve some time on your calendar to get the work done every week; right after class is actually remarkably efficient, but there's nothing wrong with just scheduling an hour right before your class to hammer out the work.
