The Wikimedia Foundation, Wikieducator and Kaltura have partnered in order to bring rich media collaboration to Wikipedia, WikiEducator, other Wikimedia projects, and any Wiki using the MediaWiki software. With the launch of this joint venture, users are invited to test new functionality that will enable Wiki pages to include collaboratively created video, audio, animation, and slideshows as well as text and images. We watched an example of a student-produced film about the bombing of Hiroshima and discussed how we would assess it. It was difficult to say since we weren't the ones that gave the assignment, but it got the conversation started. Our speaker said that in many cases a scoring guide (i.e., rubric) isn't even provided, or the scoring guide focuses exclusively on the mechanics of the product (e.g., number of images, number of PowerPoint slides). Too often, she says, the product is simply turned in without the kind of serious assessment that we usually give to more traditional writing assignments. I've observed this over the years as well, and have often felt like technological glitz has been substituted for high quality content. This is especially common with teachers who may not be very technosavvy themselves and may be more likely to be overly impressed with the polish that modern ditial tools can impart without any effort on the part of the student.

Turn a boring old spreadsheet into an interactive web-based map, timeline, or table with some simple HTML using the free, open source Exhibit project. Exhibit takes data sets up to about 500 rows, plots locations on a Google Map, dates on an interactive timeline, and displays images and links in a tabular or thumbnail view. The viewer can sort, search, and filter data in any Exhibit view without reloading the page. You can make Exhibit do all this with a single HTML file and a spreadsheet-no hardcore programming required.

Fantastic web app to use for ESL classes because it is so much more than a traditional dictionary... "What is Wordnik? Wordnik wants to be a place for all the words, and everything known about them. Traditional dictionaries make you wait until they've found what they consider to be "enough" information about a word before they will show it to you. Wordnik knows you don't want to wait-if you're interested in a word, we're interested too! Our goal is to show you as much information as possible, just as fast as we can find it, for every word in English, and to give you a place where you can make your own opinions about words known. By "information," we don't just mean traditional definitions (although we have plenty of those)! This information could be: * An example sentence-even if we've only found one sentence for a word, we'll show it to you. The Galaxy Zoo files contain almost a quarter of a million galaxies which have been imaged with a camera attached to a robotic telescope (the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, no less). In order to understand how these galaxies - and our own - formed, we need your help to classify them according to their shapes - a task at which your brain is better than even the fastest computer.

I'm excited about the possibilities this site might have for our school, especially as we're trying to be "greener" in our project choices. The booklets seem very simple to create (you're able to add images, files, backgrounds, text, video, embed code, webpages, music and your own code), are saved in the cloud, and can be published in MANY different ways, all without having to print a single sheet of paper! (actually the print function isn't available yet, but they're working on it.) For students: "Create reports, project portfolios, presentations, book reviews, papers, and more. Leverage your expertise with Internet technologies by adding multiple content elements to your project. Your teacher will appreciate the dynamic and engaging experience."
