Media organizations the world over are currently focusing on the future of their businesses. As audience and viewer attention fragments and the internet fuels a wholly different kind of information consumption there are many siren voices suggesting that traditional media business models are dead, or in some cases on life support. Rising print and distribution costs and flagging advertising are driving even flagship newspapers and magazines to slash their costs, jettison journalists and production staff, and in some cases, go entirely out of business. In Britain, television companies like ITV - once described as having a license to print money - are reconsidering their entire business rationale and, crucially, their future relationship with viewers and consumers. Yet this week the world's largest multimedia news agency, Reuters, unveils what we believe will be the future of news dissemination - not broadcasting, but narrowcasting.

"Handset makers and wireless carriers love to load up Google's Android platform with custom overlays, user interface tweaks, and third-party programs that don't ship natively with the open source operating system. That's great for them, but most power users would prefer a clean version of Android to work with, which is why the third-party ROM community is popular. Well, following in the footsteps of Samsung and it's custom S4 that was announced at Google I/O, HTC is reportedly kicking around the idea of offering a Google Edition of its One smartphone. News of the custom HTC One comes from Russell Holly over at Geek.com. Citing un-named sources, Holly says the Google Edition device would be offered in the U.S. first, though it's unclear if it would be carried in the Play Store like the Galaxy S4 will be. Other details are equally light and vague, though Holly claims an official announcement could come within the next two weeks, with a release likely planned for sometime this summer." YouTube today introduced a new feature that allows publishers to invite others to annotate their videos. Just a few weeks ago, YouTube introduced a new annotation feature that made it easier for publishers to add speech bubbles or spotlights to their videos. Now, you can send a special link to your friends so that they can easily add their own witty comments to your videos.

"Starting next week, we plan to stop active development on Google Notebook. This means we'll no longer be adding features or offer Notebook for new users. But don't fret, we'll continue to maintain service for those of you who've already signed up. As part of this plan, however, we will no longer support the Notebook Extension, but as always users who have already signed up will continue to have access to their data via the web interface at http://www.google.com/notebook."

Just finished submitting Feed Me: Motivating Newcomer Contribution in Social Network Sites ( PDF). The gist is that we analyzed a large group of newly registered FB users and counted all the things they did (or their friends did) in their first two weeks, and predicted how the newbies would behave three months later (how many photos they'd upload). We found that if their friends are uploading photos, they're more likely to, as well (no surprise). And early photo comments are good. But there are some surprises about tagging in there.

Add-Art is a free FireFox add-on which replaces advertising on websites with curated art images. The art shows are updated every two weeks and feature contemporary artists and curators.

This would be great for some motivating ways to learn lots. As blogged by David Warlick "They are all serious games aimed at exposing students to some of the critical problems that face people around the world, including malaria, famine, nuclear proliferation, and congress (not a joke). One game, World Without Oil is about the first 32 weeks of a global oil crisis. It launches with the fictitious announcement that gas, at the pumps, now costs $4.00 a gallon."

There is now a Flickr application available for Facebook, bringing a bit more color and life to your Facebook profile than many of the applications we've seen in the past two weeks.

This week Major League Baseball lobbed its second brushback pitch at Slingbox, reiterating its stance that the young company is misusing its content. It's not the first time a content owner has expressed concerns over the legality of the trapezoid-shaped set-top box, yet no one has actually filed suit.

Announcing the second annual "K12 Online" conference for teachers, administrators and educators around the world interested in the use of Web 2.0 tools in classrooms and professional practice! This year's conference is scheduled to be held over two weeks, October 15-19 and October 22-26 of 2007, and will include a preconference keynote during the week of October 8.
