This website is a presentation with an updated version of Bloom's Taxonomy for the 21st Century. It includes suggestions for web 2.0 tools for each department of the taxonomy.

By: Eitenne C. Wenger and William M. Snyder Wenger, E. C., & Snyder, W. M. (2000). Communities of practice: The organizational frontier. Harvard business review, 78(1), 139-146. The first article I started with was a Harvard Business review entry regarding communities of practice within organizations. While my other articles focused on the education world and describe actions within the social environment, this article took a different approach in explaining the inner workings CofP's play in the office. The fundamental meaning communities of practice represent go unchanged, but it is interesting that this article puts a table and explanation for the differences other office groups represent, such as an informal network, project team, and formal work group. This distinction allows for other varied communities of practice to be represented. Such as the education field and social psychology. Wenger and Snyder then take the article one step further by explaining the uses of CoPs for management and how to facilitate their growth for strong company cultures.

This article is great that CoPs and PLNs (PLEs) build upon one another to drive a foundational strategy. The primary group might only be a few people but will continue to build to the point that the entire organization is involved. I also think it is important to discuss how this is utilized not only in education but also in business (or other fields). Great pick Jason!

I liked some of the real world examples for benefits of CoP's. The story of the technician who came up with the pneumatic tube idea that was ulitmately adopted because of support from his fellow technicians was really cool to hear.

I'm in love with world of graphic design. How many people can say that they teach their craft, I can. That said, I needed to find a CoP that does just that. Although this is from the University of Brighton it provides support with young aspiring graphic designers. 

That is great! I would love to teach more of what I love to do. This is a great article that explores CoP within a specific group of learners interested in the same topic (graphic designing).

Another example of Skype and Edmodo used to connect multiple classes across the world. Here is an extensive explanation of how they used all of these tools to help them bond with the other classes.

This project was a holiday card exchange project in which one class made cards for another one across the world. When the class in China received their cards, they skyped the class in IL to talk to them and thank them.

Students from around the world use Voicethread to capture their individual voices. Then, they post the Voicethread project to this wiki to broaden the audience base. Awesome elementary resource!!

The goal of the ongoing project (started in 2009) is to connect each classroom with 80 other classrooms around the world via Skype. This could be used to foster content from any discipline. Students would blog about the experiences they have with their partner schools.

This is an example from the Flat Classroom Project that unites teams from various schools through out the US and the world to compare/contrast their demographics and what represents their country. Each group does a final project they present to the other schools in the cohort.

This open "back end" on KidBlog shows how growth over time is readily apparent in student blogging. Writing takes place fairly frequently, for a variety of purposes and audiences. Comments come from around the world.

Thought piece by Dr. Lisa Dawley published in 2009 in On The Horizon. This publication dealt with social learning in the virtual world Second Life but can be applied on other online learning communities. What is especially useful is the social network knowledge construction matrix that cover five degrees of involvement in the learning community. These levels are identifying the network, lurking, contributing, creating and leading.

This article provides insight into personal learning environments by answering seven basic questions about them. A scenario in which an avid car enthusiast uses a PLE to help him gather knowledge to restore a car provides a helpful image as an introduction. Additionally, an overview of PLEs is provided, along with some examples of institutions that encourage their use and how they are used. Web 2.0 allowed the evolution of the PLE into a digital world. One drawback mentioned by the article is that students who have never practiced metacognition in their own learning practices are said to have difficulty at times with the format of PLEs.

This text highlights the eight major principles of the connectivism theory and connects them to the Association of College and Research Libraries informational literacy standards. This source objectively evaluates the effects of connectivism when implemented for the purpose of teaching literacy standards. The big idea to be taken away is that as school librarians are embracing the digital media world, which is drastically altering student library experience, they are intuitively embracing connectivism, but would benefit from being more intentional about applying the theory. The theory applied to the library experience would involve the domains of information management, contacts, synchronous communication, and RSS. The goal would be that the conenctivism theory is applied so that students make personalized networks using the domains that maintain a dominance in secondary and post-secondary libraries.

I have not had the opportunity to attend an EduCamp, but the more I become involved in social media surrounding the world of educational technology, I see these mini-conferences occurring more and more. This article focuses on the purpose behind EduCamps, how they work and the drive behind them. These experiences can result in or happen because of a community of practice. I can see the potential for continuing the life-long learning journey why bolstering ones own PLN. These (Educamps) intrigue me, have any of you participated in these before?

A digital journal space created by Jesse Stommel about learning, teaching and technology with the idea that all learning is hybrid. Jesse has some strong opinions about teaching and learning and keeping things "human" in an ever increasing digital world.

This study explores the pitfalls of virtual teams within the business world. While I realize this paper doesn't focus on schools specifically it still applies in its exploration of communities of practice. This paper follows a few case studies while it explores virtual teams rather than teams working in the same space or building. Traditionally, virtual teams, have more challenges and communities of practice are introduced as a way to help overcome these challenges. Communities of practice are also defined and stages of participation are explored.
