According to the study, they are (1) autonomy and freedom to think beyond, (2) sources to ideas, (3) sounding board, (4) intellectual discussion, (5) like-mindedness, (6) alternative perspective and cross-pollination of ideas, (7) overcoming intellectual isolation, (8) move towards collaborative research, (9) response to research pressure, (10) synergy and leverage, (11) time and energy saving, (12) an informal ground for learning and training, (13) fostering of tangible returns, (14) driving research, (15) opportunities to met, (16) networking, information sharing and updates, (17) support and guidance, (18) sense of belonging, (19) identity, and (20) intrinsic fulfillment. As the article is about higher education, there are certainly some benefits that are more specific to their context, but I think the findings of the article are still valid.

This article actually stretches into the idea of Asynchronous Learning Networks. It is probably a little out of the scope of this assignment but the article focused on the social needs and elements of Asynchronous learning so I thought it was interesting and relevant.

This is quite old, however, as I read through the document I felt that the information was still relevant. You may read through it to see if you agree. While the tools and access have become much more advanced since 1998, the needs of participants in an asynchronous network have not changed. Let me know if you agree. This article examines how students' use of web 2.0 technology and social media can provide new and effective classroom learning opportunities. The article also looks at a study performed by Childnet International on the benefits of learning with social networking/media. The author also points out some challenges with web 2.0 tools such as critical thinking and digital literacy.

Ms Brown describes Communities of Practice in her article citing Wenger (who coined the term) in her references. She goes on to describe what communities of practice are and how COP's have changed because of the digital world (Twitter named specifically). I appreciated her list of qualities of a "good" community of practice and her video link of John Amaechi's speech on COP's.

My biggest a-ha moment from this article is the importance of seeing connections between fields, ideas, and concepts. Too often we work in silos and don't look around to see what other people are doing, even in our own organizations.

Connectivism as an educational theory is seen as a valuable tool for gathering knowledge of a subject using modern technological tools. The author feels that the theory of connectivism could benefit from increased empirical study. He feels that connectivism is at its best when it is used to refine and disseminate knowledge rapidly.

The British Museum has an outstanding presence online. I've used this website for years for students to conduct a webquest. They have other ancient cultures as well.
