Just about my favorite scholar. She leads the Futures Initiative at the Graduate Center at CUNY and writes extensively about participatory learning, the history of technology and innovations in education, including personal learning networks. This website highlights her books, research and blog.

The author discusses what happened when he created a PLN during the summer. He focuses on the qualitative data he collected from participants. He describes the two many barriers most participants shared which were a limited amount of time to develop and learn from their PLN's and also the information overload associated with connecting your PLN to social media. He also describes how the participants used the different tools.

As someone that tries to read everything in my own PLN, I appreciate the authors recommendations on ways to not become overwhelmed. Starting out by only using one or two tools and setting aside a few minutes every couple days is great advice.

While this article is directed at school librarians the information applies to anyone that is interested in expanding their PLN. The article is written in an easy to follow format and has great graphics throughout. It discusses why you should develop your PLN and provides management tips on how to make your PLN effective.

I think the author makes a great point with the "two-way street" analogy. It helps differentiate the qualities of PLNs versus PLEs and reminds us that we can be a valuable resource in others' PLNs.

In this video, the author explains the reasons educators should focus on building their Personal Learning Networks. This guy is pretty funny and does a good job explaining why PLN's are important.

Interesting article discussing the integration of technology in science instruction. The importance of using TPACK, professional development for teachers in both science content and pedagogical methods for inquiry based instruction.

Padlet is a digital board that can be used for for professional development for teachers or with students. The teacher creates an account, then creates a digital bulletin board that only requires web access via a link. Links can be emailed or posted in Google Classroom. Students can post using the link without signing in, which makes it easy to use. This tool can be used for brainstorming, formative assessment, collaboration, or an exit ticket.

I have used this in my composition classes to work on constructing thesis statements and to view the resources the students are working on.

Padlet is an online virtual "bulletin" board, where students and teachers can collaborate, reflect, share links and pictures, in a secure location. Padlet allows users to create a hidden wall with a custom URL. Padlet creators can also moderate posts, remove posts, and manage their board 24/7.

This video goes into why an educator should create a personal learning network. He talks about the responsibility of educators to create opportunities for professional development that their schools do not have time or resources to create for them. My favourite takeaway from this video is not to bother a busy colleague when a quick search can give you the answer.

This article discusses the value of PLNs specifically for educators. It gives the who, what, when, why and how for the reader.

I really like how this article breaks down what a PLN is, how to learn from one, and where to network. So often, I think that these basics are what keep people from joining in. Though networking can sound intimidating, this piece notes why they are so important to educators and, potentially, students, thus encouraging and motivating users to join in.

This work provides first person accounts of creating and implementing communities of practice as well as research about communities of practice. The goal of the work, according to the author, is to guide and promote other educators in the creation of communities of practice. Communities of Practice are explored in this work through the lens of higher education, professional development, secondary education, and primary education with the varying chapters all presenting a different type of community of practice.

After reviewing articles on the basics of Communities of Practice, I was seeking an example of COPs in Action. In an article, I saw a reference to the iEARN educational project that operates as a global educational COP for teachers and students in 100's of countries. iEARN is one of the largest online primary and secondary educational network. While the community operates through technology, the technology is not the focus but rather the just a means to connect educators. The core components of iEARN are "mission driven" (how to make the world a better place), decentralized structure (no true president our central figure), honoring teachers not technology, and a "sense of community". The article helped me contextualize what a real life community of practice looks like which gives me ideas on how to look for COPs in my own professional development.

Summary: Communities of Practice are all around us. They exist in most businesses and most professional communities. These communities are important because work is shared, revised, and organized; thus, making it better. The development of CoPs is dependent on leaders within these communities.

The sharing piece seems to be the most integral part CoP in my opinion. Also, before exploring these topics I feel my thinking was streamlined towards education, but I am understanding the need for CoP in all professions. If you are not sharing as a part of the community then you are not a contributor. This translates to the classroom and making sure all students play a role and have a place in the classroom's community! This starts as early as having a classroom "job."
