Nielsen report on social networking's new global footprint - 0 views

  •
I found the Nielson report cited in several of the articles I reviewed and decided to check it out. The Nielson report typically cites was published in 2009 and so instead I retrieved a more recent (2011) report on the state of social media. This is a fascinating graphic display of the synthesis and major findings of research on the use of social media both in the United States and globally. This is important as we consider the needs and possibilities of using the connected learning theories reviewed in our reading. The data gathered reflects a continued rise in access of social networks and blogs across a wide variety of demographics. Information such as 4 out of 5 active Internet users now visit SN and blogs cannot be ignored as we consider the impact this has on instructional design and education technology applications.

Schools Turn to In-House Experts for Tech Training - US News and World Report - 0 views

  •
Great article on schools using teachers to help teach others in the school about different areas in technology that they are competent in. My only thought was that it really should have gone further and reported on schools using its students to train the teachers and fellow classmates. We have a school nearby that has a class on basic computer repair and then the students then spend one hour a week going around the school helping out the teachers. Really cuts down on expenses and students have a sense of pride and a useful and marketable skill!

Document View - ProQuest - 0 views

  • The number of incidents in which individuals or groups attempt to remove a resource from libraries or classrooms varies.* Between 2001 and 2008, there were 3,736 challenges reported to the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom.* ALA estimates this is only 20-25% of actual challenges since many are unreported.

Rarely are these reported! I'd like to find an easy way for school librarians and teachers to report challenges!

An early report card on MOOCs - WSJ - 1 views

  •
I saw a reference to MOOCs when I was researching so I wanted to dive deeper into MOOCs (massive open online courses). This article serves as a report card discussing the successes and needed improvements for MOOCs. MOOCs biggest successes seem to be the huge reach they have with their online presence. Millions of people enroll in the courses and top universities, such as Harvard and MIT, have MOOCs. However, some pitfalls are that less than 10% of people who enroll in MOOCs actually finish. The article gives ideas for improving MOOCs mostly based off the belief that online courses can be isolating and more collaboration with actual humans, via chats and videos, need to be included in MOOCs. I found this read interesting because the MOOCs are founded with the connectivism theory in mind, however many of this components that drive connectivsm and communities of practice are lacking.
  •
Jake, I found a resource on MOOCs as well and while it was a positive presentation of them, it also noted some of the pitfalls. The fact that they draw mostly highly educated students, makes me wonder how accessible they are for all people. However, I know they are new and evolving, so it will be interesting to follow their development.
  •
This article was extremely interesting! I was surprised to see the the high percentage of people who sign up for MOOCs and don't finish. I also strongly agree with the comment in the article, "people need people." Thanks for sharing!

Online Communities of Practice: Ecosystems for Professional Growth - 1 views

  •
Specifically discussing how online communities are essential for professional development and growth in education, this report explores the factors of EDTECH that help enrich learning. The ecosystems in times of budget shortfalls provide creative means for educators to connect and stay connected to colleagues. Establishing or joining an existing community of practice is critical for educators looking to broaden their horizons. The issue is getting everyone on board and implement communities of practice within professional development workshops at schools.
