This article discusses communities of practice in a business setting, specifically the Federal Highway Administration. An overview of communities of practice is provided. The article identified these communities as essential for "knowledge management." They can vary in size, purpose, and style. Organizations, such as the FHA, benefit from communities of practice as they encourage problem solving, best practices, communication and professional skills, strategy, and professional development.

Hanna, thank you for sharing this article. I always like to see how things function outside of the educational world. This article points out why Communities of Practice work, especially in the work place. Each person can now focus on best practices and communication. The article talks about how these communities are particularly important as places where knowledge can be stored and passed through the years ensuring information that was perviously held in informal networks is not lost.

I had never heard of start pages until reading this article. Are these used? I didn't recognize any of the products listed.

As the person in charge of the LMS at the School of Nursing, I find this article to be completely valid. We have some younger faculty that want to do more than our LMS will allow, even with some of the widgets that have been added. The main problem that we have is that our current faculty simply use our LMS as a place to provide information instead of encouraging students to use it more like a PLE.

Personal Learning Networks are nothing new, they have been around since the beginning of civilization. This article highlights how communication technology enables the expansion of your learning networks without going into overload.

This is an excellent guide for someone seeking to create and develop his or her PLN. In addition to development tips, the article provides management strategies that could be useful for someone planning a PLN.

While this presentation does contain some how-tos and examples of a course in connectivism, it gives an easy-to-manage view of connectivism as a theory and why social networking is so valuable. It also explores personal learning environments and has many good visuals that help explain it all.

Etienne Wenger discusses elements of Communities of Practice, with a focus on the private sector. Though the discussion is pertinent to all uses of CoP. Noted as a crucial component is how the community is managed by facilitators, for that is who is ultimately responsible for caring for the domain of information. And who must know what the group needs in order to prosper. Where the information is being shared by peers to address questions and challenges in common. While interactions among community members include cultural and structural components, there is space for each participant to realize their identity through connections and engagement

This is a fantastic resource to learn more about CoPs, particularly if you are considering forming one. It provides basic info and background about CoPs, but also provides a few examples, and also concludes with some links to external Websites where you can see additional examples of live CoPs.

I chose this page because it shows how various schools have used Schoology's Learning Management System for organizing their classroom needs including discussions and cloud-based collaborations.

PBworks looks like a Learning Management System that can be used for free, however the collaborative parts require a subscription. For $99/ year you get security, control over who sees your pages, storage space, and the collaborative perks.

This article focuses on the role of personal learning environments in higher education. I particularly appreciated the description of the PLE in the article. Pointing out what it offers that Learning Management Systems do not, the PLE is explained as the future of education where the student takes control and responsibility from the reigns of the institution. It also suggests that PLEs have staying power in education due to the fact that they are not wrapped up with a specific technology, rather they have the ability to adapt and change as technology around us continues to do so. The author discusses how students should be given challenging situations rather than ridged assignments.
