Finally found an article that focuses specifically on middle school educators and social media. The more and more I envelop myself with the Knowledge Quest journal, the more I want a subscription. I recommend taking a look at this publication and article. This article puts an emphasis on Web 2.0 apps like Ning and Wikis, and the use of webinars to help mitigate fears surrounding the usage of social media in the middle grade levels.

Sounds like a useful article. I have never heard of Ning or Knowledge Quest. I went to check in out but the link is down.

This article was a study of novice music teachers' experience using an online community for one year using wikispace. A community of practice was formed in this wikispace and findings found that teachers' emotional needs were supported in this community regardless of grade level taught and music specialty taught. Knowing that other teachers were going through similar things gave teachers a feeling of support.

This article discusses cognitive strategies in CBI. This was a study that looked at 51 students in 3rd grade and looked to see if CBI worked in the given conditions. They studied the students' cognitive strategies. This study found that individual working conditions worked better than dyadic conditions. Children learn at all times, even when they are not engaged by a teacher or other adult.

8th grade students in New York were given the assignment to tweet about the book and movie animal farm as they studied those. The students felt that it took a potentially "boring" project and made it more fun. They got deeper insight into the material than if they had just done it by themselves. This assignment could be done for any number of topics or mediums.
