What are "communities of practice"? - Nicole Brown - 1 views

  •
Ms Brown describes Communities of Practice in her article citing Wenger (who coined the term) in her references. She goes on to describe what communities of practice are and how COP's have changed because of the digital world (Twitter named specifically). I appreciated her list of qualities of a "good" community of practice and her video link of John Amaechi's speech on COP's.

Improving Teaching and Learning Through Communities of Practice - Future Ready Schools - 0 views

  •
In this site, communities of practice are defined as "groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly." This seems very encompassing. It would include a group of friends that play a simple, addicting game on their smartphone. If this group of friends hangs out and discusses tips on how to do well in the game, boom: community of practice. At this point in my research, I'm surprised that there is so much literature produced to discuss something so simple. The value of a community of practice is clear: passionate, committed people doing something and learning from each other. But this has existed throughout human history, and is now labeled. Next, I'm going to search for who coined this term.

Online communities of practice in education.pdf - 0 views

  •
This article describes five major issues in the design and implementation of online communities of practice. The common theme in these five articles is they all focus on the online communication process, and they all try to understand how CoPs, as a reflective tool, can help improve professional practice.
  •
While this article provides examples of communities of practice in action and provides easy to understand definitions it also discusses ways in which CoP's can be sustained. It's one thing to understand their purpose or how to get them started but what do we do once they are up and running? How can we keep a CoP going for say multiple school years rather than diminish over time?

Etienne and Beverly Wenger-Traynor provide an introduction to communities of practice in this PDF found on their website. The introduction includes a definition, examples of what communities of practice may look like, how they began, and in what sectors of the community they are used today. Myths about communities of practice are also addressed.
  •
By Etienne and Beverly Wegner-Trayner, this is an 8 page pdf of the basics of CoPs. I really like that there are myths debunked and demystified within the content of this paper as well.
  •
I appreciate the scope of this resource including elements such as where the concept of communities of practice comes from, where it is applied, and myths about its usage. Moreover in regards to the myths I find it helpful that the resource includes a guide to how true the assumption listed may be such as: partially true, mostly false, false and maybe. I believe this section adds value to the theory of learning communities by acknowledging the misconceptions and limitations. Additionally I found the table with dialogue examples featuring various types of learning community tasks to be quite helpful in making sense of the dynamic ways these communities can be utilized.

Community of Practice Design Guide - 3 views

  •
This is a step-by-step guide to setting up and growing CoP. It defines CoP and discusses why they are important. The guide also outlines how to establish and grow the community. At the heart of any successful CoP is purpose. A rubric is given to help identify the effectiveness of the community both in terms of infrastructure and language of inquiry.

I found the chart on the development of a community of practice interesting. It takes energy and commitment to sustain the community.
  •
I really liked this article, it gave some great information on CoP and the bullets on the first page were a nice outline of why CoPs are important and useful.
  •
This article provides a step-by-step guide for designing and cultivating communities of practice in higher education. The first part of the guide is for those who are considering the use of CoPs to facilitate collaboration, learning, or knowledge generation and want to know more. That last part of the guide helps CoP designers and facilitators understand the questions, issues, and options involved in planning and cultivating communities https://net.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/nli0531.pdf

Using Personal Learning Networks to Leverage Communities of Practice in Public Affairs ... - 5 views

  •
The authors state the the use of blogs as aggregators for student Personal Learning Networks (PLN) is an effective tool to help organize the many fascists of unique environments. They point out that in order for students to successfully create and use their own PLNs there must first be a successful example by an instructor for the students to model. They point out that although students may be using several of the tools that will ultimately comprise their PLNs, it is a fallacy to assume that students inherently understand the power and connectedness of these environments.

This articles pulls together different articles regarding learning and delivery methods. I discusses what is needed to access communities and use different technologies.
  •
This article discusses how the use of technology can connect people to enhance their abilities. They discussed this in terms of public affairs, but it could be used in other fields. Connectivism is talked about in terms of growth as an individual and as a collection of generational knowledge.
  •
This article explores connectivism as a learning theory, then discusses how to use personal learning networks in your communities of practice. The author quotes from many experts in communities of practice and connectivism. Much detail was given to blogging.
  •
Although this article is focused specifically on public affairs education, it is relevant to all learners. The author discusses professional learning networks as methods to connect and build communities of practice. Using personal experiences teaching a college course, the author's creation of communities of practice took learning for students to the next level.

Communities of Practice for educators - 2 views

  •
This article provides a definition and description of communities of practice. A community of practice is a social way to learn and share a common practice/activity/topic. Three implications are identified for learning: learning occurs through relationships, educators need to facilitate these communities for their students, and experience and activity lead to knowledge.
  •
As learners, we can learn most, if not best, through our interactions and relationships with others. Co-participation in groups and/or activities are viewed equally as valuable as content delivered in traditional methods. Educators should strive to get students to include themselves in communities to learn through doing.
  •
This article concludes by focusing on the implications for educators. It does not provide solutions but rather questions and ideas to consider.

Knowing in action: Beyond Communities of Practice - 0 views

  •
This article closely examines how different types of knowing in action emerge in communities of practice.
  •
Thanks for sharing the article. The thing I liked the most about what they had to say was that no matter which educational theory a person felt attached to, CoPs would be valuable. So many of the things we study say that they are the best new way to go. CoPs are common sense ways to solve problems.

Learning Networks in Practice - 8 views

  •
This article by Stephen Downes provides a great insight into what an effective PLN looks like and how it functions. I enjoyed reading about his second stage of PLNs, which is the "personal learning environment." This idea is presented as the evolution of PLNs due to technology and connectivism in the classroom.

Wow, there was a lot of good content in this article. One of my biggest take aways from the article is the great misapplication of online communities. The misapplication lies in the idea that a community follows an online course, like what we are doing right now in 543. The discussion community is created at the beginning of the course and members are active participants, during the course. Once the course ends, the community ends as well. This is not what the online community is intended to do. It is a long-term development of resources that needs to continue on.
  •
This reminded me a lot of an article I shared for this assignment that also discussed the need for currently used LMS-based systems to move toward encompassing PLNs and Web 2.0 tools to up their social networking components. I think this is definitely an important consideration, especially for educators working in an online environment.
  •
This article by Stephen Downes gives a definition of a community of practice and then discusses PLE's moving into networks and the characteristics of a learning network: diversity, autonomy connectedness and openness.
  •
As I was relatively unfamiliar with learning networks before this course, I wanted to find resources that showed me what they looked like and examples of how they can be used. This article introduces the importance of using digital tools effectively and empower ourselves to gain the knowledge the web offers. The author states that "Learning therefore evolves from being a transfer of content and knowledge to the production of content and knowledge". Working in a network, PLE or communities of practice allow learners to be creative about information and knowledge, instead of just consuming information and knowledge. The article highlights the key benefits of a PLN: diversity, autonomy, connectedness, and openness.

Communities of Practice - 1 views

This approach views learning as an act of membership in a "community of practice." The theory seeks to understand both the structure of communities and how learning occurs in them. The communities of practice concept was pioneered by the Institute for Research on Learning, a spin-off of the Xerox Corporation in Palo Alto, CA.

This article analyzed the development of a community of practice of student-teachers in music in a Brazilian university outreach program. After the introduction, the author covers in detail the theory of community of practice and education. I thought the idea of identity and the strength of peer-learning activities in the outreach program were very interesting.
