6 Ways for Teachers To Expand Their Personal Learning Network - 0 views

  •
This article gives good examples of 6 different platforms educators can use for a PLN. These are already established, and allows the educator to lurk, or become involved. Some of these outlets educators use already, so the learning curve isn't a harsh as joining something you haven't used before. It gives a good description of each tool and some provide links to pre-made education groups or people to follow.

Personal Learning Network Movie: Connected - 1 views

A video that defines a PLN and discusses the importance of them in an educational environment.
  •
Cool resource! I didn't look into using videos as resources but I can see how this would have great value. This one starts out a little dramatic (especially with the music!) but is VERY informative! I also like how it uses other scholarly resources to validate the points of how using PLNs can be effective. Also, I appreciate the clear definition of PLNs

elearn Magazine: How important is Twitter in your Personal Learning Network? - 1 views

  •
This article discusses the importance of Twitter to PLNs. The author points to a variety of benefits of using Twitter in a PLN, including the ability to tap into collective knowledge, to amplify one's own ideas, and to solicit help from the PLN. As an infrequent Twitter user, this article really pushes me to question my lack of use of this powerful tool.

The Importance of Personal Learning Network as a Teacher of Today - 0 views

  •
With budget cuts and changing expectations of what students need to learn, teachers need to be life-long learners to keep up with the changes. The Internet is a resource that allows teachers to collaborate with others, share resources, and solve challenges in the classroom.

Professional Learning Communities- Can Our Students Do This Too? - 0 views

  •
In this issue of CUE (Computer-Using Educators), the main theme is Personal Learning Networks. "PLN: Face-to-Face to The Net", "PLN: New Ways to Interact and Broaden Our Horizons" or "Overcoming the Barriers to Effective Ongoing Staff Development Through Online Communities of Practice" are some of the articles compiled in this CUE issue. Authors explain that other members of the PLN are the most important aspect, how empowering it is to share ideas and resources with a worldwide network or the way experienced/tenure teachers are been helped by younger teachers to develop computer-based competences.

This is a volume of Advancing Student Achievement through Technology: On Cue. It has many articles that I plan to read through, but the one that really caught my eye is "Professional Learning Communities- Can Our Students Do This Too?" on page 10. While it is not so much an explanation of a Professional Learning Community (PLC) I believe it is a great testament to what we are researching and trying to do through this course. The author was urged by her district to encourage PLCs in her 6th grade English classroom. With adults improving their education through the use of technology she feels her students should be doing it too. It gave many great quotes from the 6th grade students and I believe it is an encouraging article as we being to look at social media and the possible uses it can have within a classroom.

My List: A Collection on "Theory-Supported Social Networking" | Diigo - 7 views

I shared all of these resources individually before I realized a list would create less clutter and be easier to share with others. So, sorry for the redundancy -- here is my list. I tried to make sure all resources were available for free and didn't require library login access, though there were some great articles I didn't include for that reason. I'll be interested to see how all of our resources compare.

Gretel, I posted a list first. But upon reading the assignment parameters, we are supposed to post each link individually anyway!

What is a PLN? - 12 views

A short, engaging YouTube video on defining Personal Learning Networks.

This is one of the videos I watched on YouTube as well, Melodie! It does such a great job demonstrating a large amount of information about PLNs in a very short time frame. I thought there were two really critical points made in this video. First, Lalande makes it clear that a PLN does not necessarily have to be online, but it is the digital interaction does make a PLN special. I also liked the way he presented all of the options for interaction (i.e. a lurker or sharer) as well as the networking tool options, such as Twitter or YouTube. Thanks for sharing!
  •
I thought the video did a very good job of describing a PLN in a very efficient manner but matter of fact way. It was simplistic, yet allowed the view to comprehend the extensive nature of a PLN. The most important part of the video in my mind is when it talks about it is something you can choose to participate when you want and pick and choose things that are best suited for you!
  •
Melodie, thank you for sharing this video. Youtube has such great resources, what a great way to explain PLNs to colleagues. I especially appreciate how it specifically described the network as the one you get involved in when, where and how you want to. I appreciate how he describes how you can be heavily invested or not, but that you will gain a larger benefit if you leave the "lurker" phase and invest more.
  •
Love having short snippets/videos that describe a topic in brief. Sometimes, a topic can become so cumbersome so quick. This was an informative video, short, and to the point. Thanks for posting!
  •
I really enjoy the simplicity of this video while at the same time the depth of understanding it gives in such a brief period of time. For me this video really drives home the effectiveness technology can have in presenting potentially overwhelming information in a very easy to understand manner.
  •
In my opinion, the key words of this video are "what", because you choose what to share, "where" and "when" to do it. It is brief but powerful. Thanks Melodie for sharing it!

This is a really great resource for those wanting to have an established PLN at their fingertips. It does lack some of the individuality of a true PLN (or so it seems), but certainly worth having in the toolbox. Nice one.
  •
This is a great resource when creating your on PLN. I agree with Jon in that it seems bigger than a true PLN, but what a network they have built here.
  •
Another great PLN resource. Many great videos to share. A place to chat with other educators.
  •
A great collection of blogs, videos, resource (including an alphabetical list of Twitter Hashtags) for education.

This is a great PLN for educators. I found videos and blog postings that were extremely interesting. What a cool resource!

Understanding personal learning networks: Their structure, content and the networking s... - 1 views

This article was the study of professional learning networks and the impact they had on teachers. There were anecdotal responses given with teachers identifying specifically what had improved their practice because of the strength of their PLN. The author identified that not only is creating a PLN a skill, but it is also a mentality.
