A Brief History of Online Learning [Infographic] - 5 views

  •
To me, the most interesting thing in this infographic is that distance learning is not recent at all, and it actually dates as back as 1700s through correspondence. As you walk through the history of online learning on the left column, the right column will inform you about some other fun facts that happened at the very same year.
  •
Dear friends, I liked this infographic because it is followable to see the development of online learning, year by year
  •
I think a striking point in this infographic seems to be that the developments in the last decade seems to be quicker and more extensive than ever. There are only 12-year distance (2002-2014) between when OpenCourseWare started and 98 % of the universities started online programs. It is also seen that online courses are regarded as highly as face-to-face courses for most people of business and academy which might put the existence of today's pyhsical schools into risk. When we consider that online courses and learning tools are not that common in Turkey, it seems we are left behind that new distant learning paradigm in the world.

An infographic on technology AND education. This infographic compares 2002 and 2012 in internet usage. Quantitative (the what) and qualitative (the how and why) perpectives.

We can also compare Internet usage in 2012 and 2015. For example, in the infographic, it is indicated that the number of Facebook in 2012 users is 900 million. The number of Facebook users in 2015 is about 1,500 million (Statista, 2016). These numbers show that how Internet usage increases dramatically.
  •
I love how it shows the most searched items. You can clearly see what the trends were back then.
  •
Seeing the enormous increase in the number of people using Facebook (from 3 to 900 million users), time spent on the Internet (46 minutes to 4 hours) made me think back about Punya Mishra's (at SITE Keynote) comment on making learning process a part of student's daily life. e.g. a class discussion or course content carried out on Facebook which can increase student participation. Inserting education to top trend websites or applications might be a useful idea to reflect upon.
