I'm actually not sure what to call this, but I will throw it into the "tool" pile. It's just too neat not to share. With this flash program, users can create Jackson Pollock-style "splatter paintings" by moving the mouse around.

Hot Potatoes kind of straddles the tool/software divide. It's a fun powerful program that I have mainly used for crossword puzzle creation, but it is able to do a lot more, like matching games and short answer quizzes. Good for testing Knowledge-level content.

I will throw this in with software, even though it is a site. Jay Is Games are the premier bloggers associated with casual games, many of which have mathematical and puzzle components. It's a good place to start to look for casual (and often educational!) "time-wasters."

Audacity is a free, open-source, cross-platform audio recorder and editor that can be used to create podcasts, among other things. It takes a little while to get used to it, but once you are going, it's extremely powerful for a free program!
