Lies My Teacher Told Me: Children's books misrepresentation of minorities - 10 views
-
This article examined how different minority groups are represented in children's literature. Of course, studies in the article show that children's authors typiclly employ sterotypes to shape minority characters, if they emplot minority characters at all. For example, most native americans are representented in animal-based clothing with huge feathyery head pieces and woefully lacking vocabularies. Today, we know that most native americans have adapted to society and have proffessional careers in which they do not wear huge feathery hats or necklaces make from animal bones. Even though we know this, when we think of a native american or are asked to draw one, we include the sterotypical indian garb. This is probably because society ingrained in us as children that native americans wear silly clothes and sadly that idea has stuck with us. Similar sterotypical images have been attached to hispanic and black people and women through images that are prevalent in childrens books.

The Children in Room E4 -- "Wide Response to Educational Plight of Mexican Immigrants" - 18 views

I think that the idea that a group of imigrants can't assimilate to American culture because their culture doesn't value education is ridiculous.Mostly because in today's world, pretty much every culture values education because in almost every culture those who are educated get the best jobs, make the most money, have the most influence and can provide the best future for their families. It might appear to someone that cultures that are generally not as educated don't value education but upon a second glance one might realize that the reason a culture isnt educated is becuase they have little or no access to education. Cultures in this circumstance then dream of moving their families somewhere that they can become educated, like America.
