Scholastic BookFlix: Fictional Video Storybooks Paired Nonfiction eBooks-Online! Grades... - 1 views

  •
Scholastic BookFlix is a new interactive online literacy resource for Grades PreK-3 that pairs fictional video storybooks from Weston Woods with classic nonfiction eBooks from Scholastic. While reading and stories have been around for centuries, the availability of having videos and books read aloud through the computer is a more modern creation. Book Flix is a subscription based site through Scholastic, featuring many popular children's literature in a variety of subjects. Each subject provides the student with a video based on a book, and another which is read aloud page by page. This site fits into the category of technology centered, where Mayer (2009) acknowledged technology often drives the method of instruction. Students in my classroom enjoyed being able to view and hear their favorite books providing the auditory and visual learners more opportunity to enjoy the story.

This also is a site which I have been familiar with, more recently when I received my interactive whiteboard. This site appears to be much more technology centered, where it is designed to be used with the interactive boards and student response systems. BrainPop.com is also partner with the Promethean Company, where many of its features are accessible using their products. As you navigate through the subject areas, each lesson begins with a short video and provides additional resources such as games, printable handouts and a short quiz. There also are sites for K-3 and ESL learners. The technology used to present this site to students (interactive whiteboards, student response systems) was developed prior to this site, although it is possible to integrate this in others ways to students (centers, whole group using a projector) but it is clear this site was directly designed and developed with the technology in mind first.

Mrs. McDowell's Classroom Centers - 0 views

  •
"Mrs. McDowell's Classroom Centers" is a teacher created website that explains how she uses her classroom centers. This website is meant to serve as an example to help other instructors to set up a classroom with literacy work stations. It includes many words explaining the work stations with many graphics that exemplifies the models. This website is learner-centered because it is using technology, links to books, ideas, etc., to aid human cognition. The learner who uses this information is learning under a cognitive situation. I find this website especially useful, and it compliments human abilities, as technology should (Mayer, 2009, p. 13).

Work Stations and Small Groups - 0 views

Each of these websites are videos on YouTube by Stenhouse Publishers starring Debbie Diller, the author of Practice with Purpose: Literacy Work Stations for Grades 1-3. Ms. Diller explains how and why literacy works stations are useful. These videos are very learner-centered as a result that it is using technology to meet the cognitive needs of the learners who may be interested in discovering more about literacy work stations.

Mrs. Pearce's Classrom Website - 0 views

  •
"Mrs. Pearce's Classroom Website" is a website that offers many research-based ideas that will assist teachers in creating more successful literacy work stations. The website includes many words and pictures, which is promoting learning. The website is learner-centered due to the fact that it is aiding human cognition with the graphics and words included. Although the website is not very interactive, it does offer many examples which teachers can use to build on prior knowledge and their own experiences. This website is an example of multimedia instruction, pictures and words meant to foster learning (Mayer, 2009, p. 5).
