This site offers a great questionnaire that I feel is a good cognitive activity. This questionnaire is used to help the teacher gain understandings of the importance of knowing their students learning style…knowing where they are in the arena of their learning styles. I feel first year students at this point are naive to the question…What type of learning style do you have? Knowing the answer would help not only the instructors understand how gear their instructions but to help the student be successors of their college journey.
This site offers a great seminar on motivating first year students. From Grades to Grads: Teaching Strategies to Motivate Today's First-Year Students. This interactive PowerPoint presentation will help to improve the desire to motivate our students to succeed. This will work on the motivation of the teacher thus making it more of a behavioral activity.
This site offers an seminar on: "Rules of Engagement": Getting Past the Attitude and Engaging "Whatever…" The rules have changed. Today's first-year students present new challenges for faculty- challenges that require new ways of teaching. How can coursework compete with movies, television, computer games, music, and "hanging out" with friends? What if school is not a top priority? This e-seminar with one of today's foremost experts on engaging first-year students will explore understanding the new "Rules of Engagement," unlocking students' intrinsic motivation, and unleashing our creativity as teachers. This is both a cognitive and behavioral activity.
