In an interview with Tyler Wood, Fred Benesen explains how and why data is far more subjective than we always recognise. The term mathwashing should be more of a warning to fellow technologists: don't overlook the inherent subjectivity of building things with data just because you're using math. Algorithm and data driven products will always reflect the design choices of the humans who built them, and it's irresponsible to assume otherwise.

Gooru is a new service (still carrying the Alpha label) that aims to provide teachers and students with an extensive collection of videos, interactive displays, documents, diagrams, and quizzes for learning about topics in math and science. As a Gooru member you have access to hundreds of resources according to subject areas such as chemistry, biology, ecology, algebra, calculus, and more. Within each subject area you can look for resources according to media type such as video, interactive display, slides, text, and lesson plans. When you find resources that you want to use, drag them to the resources folder within your account. Gooru also offers you the option to add resources to your folders even if you did not find them within Gooru.

Study Blue lets students across all ages and subjects create flashcards to help with the study process. The website will store your flashcards for later use, or for the use of others who might want a more cumulative set of study resources. Study Blue boasts the "largest and fastest growing library of online study materials," including quizzes, review sheets, and the aforementioned flashcards.

Student blogging is not a project, but a process. We are continuously striving to refine, improve and re-evaluate. As I am meeting with teachers individually, I can't stress enough the importance of READING other blogs (professional, student, blogs about your hobby, blogs about other interests you have etc.). I am trying to filter and funnel quality blogs in education, their grade level and  areas of interest to them as I come across them, so they can build a quality RSS Reader. BUT.. we need their help in having a basic understanding of blogs, its pedagogical uses, as a platform of a new writing genre (digital writing) and how our blogfolios fit into your curriculum and the BIG PICTURE of LEARNING. The blogfolios are not a platform to use only for a particular subject, but should give evidence of learning for each student.

The American Federation of Teachers' new online community Share My Lesson offers teachers free access to the resources and knowledge of their peers across the country. Featured are nearly 260,000 teaching resources, a monthly resource calendar, free games and activities mapped to the Common Core and discussion forums. Teaching resources are divided by grade, subject and rating and include activities, puzzles, games, lesson plans, posters, assessments and more.

At first I wasn't sure about the poor range of (physics/science) books I found in the subject sections, but when I searched using more specific terms (like energy, electricity etc), there were loads of multi-page docs (PDFs) available to download. Worth exploring a little more deeply.

This brand-spanking-new site aims to provide an uncommonly inviting place to teach and be taught. Instructors can upload video on any subject - be it salsa dancing or making glogg - then divvy it into lessons. Unlike YouTube, Curious lets teachers choose to charge for lessons, features an oversized playback window and generally feels friendly and constructive. There are no creepy comments from anonymous YouTubers here, and the site's proprietors currently approve teachers and eyeball content to ensure that these online classes are, well, classy.

Our new site, now accepting student content. StudentCreated.TV is a free, educational "kids teaching kids" project featuring Student-Created Tutorials for all school subjects. Mr. Marcos & his Students (of Mathtrain.TV) at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, CA as well as students from around the globe are invited to contribute. Site works on mobile devices, such as iPads and iPhones.

"One of the very interesting aspects of Twitter is the ability to have online chats about specific subjects, usually lasting for an hour or so. These chats utilise a particular hashtag, and people who want to engage in the chat will keep an eye out for the particular tag, and will use it themselves if they want to become involved. eLearning Programs is a Department of Education  curriculum service which offers schools a variety of online K-10 courses and programs which can complement, augment or extend local provision and provide students with access to educational experiences and opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable.  It includes options for students identified as highly able or gifted (CELO Online), and some online VET courses for students in years 11-12.  The courses students undertake are usually delivered by  an online delivery teacher with the support and supervision of the students' own school. eLearning programs vary in length and nature; for example some are full year subjects while others are term by term opportunities.
