This Little-Known iOS Feature Will Change the Way We Connect | Gadget Lab | WIRED - 1 views

  •
"The idea behind FireChat is simple. It's a chatting app. After registering with a name - no email address or other personal identifiers required - you're dropped into a fast-moving chatroom of "Everyone" using it in your country. The interesting aspect, however, is the "Nearby" option. Here, the app uses Apple's Multipeer Connectivity framework, essentially a peer-to-peer feature that lets you share messages (and soon photos) with other app users nearby, regardless of whether you have an actual Wi-Fi or cellular connection."

How to Bring Podcasts Back Into The Music App in iOS 6 | MacTrast
  •
"One of the changes Apple made in iOS 6 was the removal of podcasts from the Music app, releasing a separate stand-alone Podcasts app instead. While some people preferred this approach, other people hate the change, and just want all of their audio in one place!"

Essay on use of iPad by academics | Inside Higher Ed - 3 views

  •
Two years ago I wrote a column for Inside Higher Ed entitled "The iPad for Academics." Now, two years and two new models of iPad later, it seems time to revisit some of that original column: How well does it stand up, how did my predictions turn out, and what have I learned since then? The answers are, roughly, "good" "O.K." and "a lot." When I wrote my column, no one was sure what the future held for the iPad, and there was serious skepticism about the more apocalyptic predictions. In fact, somewhat boringly, Apple's release of the iPad did what most Apple products do -- change the world, sell millions of units, and alter our information ecosystem irrevocably -- but it didn't end the world.

Are Apps The Future of Book Publishing? - Forbes - 2 views

  •
We're at the dawn of the tablet era now. Earlier this month, Apple sold 3 million of its new iPad during the opening weekend, with some analysts expecting over 60 million of the tablets to be sold worldwide. What's more, e-book readers are selling even more briskly than tablets. People are using those e-readers, too. On Amazon.com, books for its Kindle outsell its paper books. What's more, the explosion of e-books is putting pressure on publishers between demands for price cuts on one hand, and competition from independent authors like Amanda Hocking, who earned over $2 million selling e-books on her own before signing with a major publisher. It's no surprise, then, that publishers are turning to the app as a possible product for books moving forward.  This has led to another movement towards enhanced books, particularly as apps for iPhone, Android, and other tablets. Are tablet apps the book of the future?

Numbers (itunes link) spreadsheet app directly from Apple, is a worthy Microsoft Excel-like competitor for the iPad. It is a powerful tool for teachers who own an iPad, and can be used for assessment, especially during report card season. Why The Nexus 7 Is Competition For The iPad [Opinion] - 0 views

  •
The reviews from people testing the Nexus 7 for an extended period have been almost unanimously positive. However, while many have rightly compared the Nexus 7 to the Kindle Fire, and stated that Google's effort blows Amazon's out of the water, few would even mention the Nexus 7 in the same breath as the Apple iPad. I disagree with this inherent refusal to put the two on a par. I believe the Nexus 7 is competition for the iPad and I feel competition to Apple's stranglehold on the tablet market is exactly what's needed at this juncture

MHSS iPad Project - 0 views

  •
In 2012 Musgrave Hill SS is entering a new phase in learning as we begin an Apple trial to investigate the effectiveness of iPads for all students, in particular special needs students in mainstream classrooms. We have three target classrooms working with iPads 1:2 with students and two sets of six iPads available for all classes to borrow for use inteaching and learning. The classes in the 1:2 project have several special needs students and a teams of teachers and aides who will support the students, their learning and the project. We will document the iPad Project and provide data that we hope will substantiate our belief that iPads and many other digital technologies are essential to support teaching and learning at our school in the 21st Century.
