Aitor Erkoreka, profesor e investigador de la UPV/EHU, ha demostrado que las cubiertas vegetales son idóneas para lugares donde hace mucho calor en verano. Así, mediante estos recubrimientos se consigue que la necesidad de aire acondicionado sea menor que con las cubiertas convencionales, con el mismo grado de confort, y por tanto, que disminuya también el consumo energético. Sin embargo, para obtener buenos resultados, es imprescindible un adecuado sistema de riego.

Vegetated assemblies can improve a roofing system's energy efficiency. The plants and growing medium can reduce the cooling energy need in the summer through shading, insulation, evaporative cooling, and thermal mass. They can reduce the surface temperature and mitigate the urban heat island effect. Green roofs also promote infiltration and reduce runoff, lessening the burden on stormwater infrastructure. Additionally, they add amenity space and improve biodiversity in the urban areas, making Canadian cities more livable.

As a series we've covered a number of urban farms, it's a subject that's near and dear to our hearts as urbanites. Farms in the city, and particularly rooftop farms seem to be an obvious way to make positive change in our food systems. For that reason we wanted to see what two iconic Chinese cities had to offer. La Asociación Mexicana para la Naturación de Azoteas (AMENA) es una asociación civil creada en 2005 con el objetivo de investigar, informar y capacitar sobre los beneficios ambientales, sociales y económicos que representa la Naturación de azoteas. AMENA colabora estrechamente con instituciones de educación superior como la Universidad Autónoma Chapingo (UACh) en la investigación de diferentes aspectos de la Naturación de Azoteas en nuestro país.
