Texas Wind Farm Uses NASA Radar to Prevent Bird Deaths : TreeHugger - 0 views

  •
What do you do if you build a wind farm smack dab in the middle of a major bird migration route, and want to avert the anger of conservationists? Put up a radar system that's designed to shut down the entire thing when it detects a mass of birds on the way. That's what's been done at the 202 MW Peñascal Wind Farm in Texas: System Detects Birds Approaching Four Miles Away The system uses radar originally developed for NASA and the US Air Force to detect birds as far as four miles away, The Guardian reports. When it picks up the approaching birds, it analyzes the existing weather conditions and determines in real time whether those birds are in danger of flying into the blades. The system then automatically restarts the turbines when the birds have passed.

Hi Friends Today i'll explain you about the most biggest and largest birds on our beautiful earth.these birds increase the nature beauty. Now we have read in this article that which bird is largest or which bird is highest in the world. Then you are at the exactly place. Birds are very lovable, and it comes in different shape and sizes. It can be as small as 5 cm (bee hummingbird), and as big as 2.1 meter (Ostrich). Flying ability gives the bird's ability to migrate to all around the world.

bird friendly glazing - 0 views

  •
Bird friendly insulated glass (BFIG) is a type of glass that is designed to reduce bird collisions. BFIG units are made up of two or more panes of glass that are separated by a spacer. The spacer is designed to create a pattern that is visible to birds, but not to humans. The pattern helps to break up the reflection of the sky and trees, which can make it difficult for birds to see the glass.

Study eases fear about wind farm threat to birds: ENN - 0 views

  •
Wind turbines do not drive birds from surrounding areas, British researchers said on Wednesday, in findings which could make it easier to build more wind farms. Conservation groups have raised fears that large birds could get caught in the turbines and that the structures could disturb other species. But scientists fou

For every creature a home is an important factor. It provides protection from predators and affords shelter from the elements. Birds, in particular, devote considerable time to creating a suitable abode. The vast majority build their own nests, although there are some exceptions. For example, some owls use a hollow in a tree , and most falcons and nightjars dispense with a nest altogether and lay their eggs on bare earth.

The Nature Conservancy in Montana - Making Wind Energy Safe for Wildlife - 0 views

  •
Scientists at The Nature Conservancy in Montana have completed the first analysis of where wind generation facilities can be located with minimal risk to the state's wildlife and the environment. Wind provides great promise for a clean and renewable source of energy, but each year wind generation facilities kill tens of thousands of birds and important pollinators such as bats. . And yet, wind energy development has moved forward with very little science-based analysis that might help prevent this kind of environmental harm. The impacts of wind generation are greater than just the immediate airspace. Most turbines take up 40-100 acres of land, so large-scale wind farms can span thousands of acres. Each facility also requires roads and transmission corridors.

EcoGeek - 6 Stupidly Simple Steps to Saving Billions of Gallons of Gas - 0 views

  •
OK...gas prices are getting out of hand, and carbon emissions have been out of hand for a long time. So let's kill two birds with...well...five stones. We generally focus on high-technology here at EcoGeek, and how we can save energy with smart designs. But sometimes, there are simpler ways. In fact, an absolutely tremendous amount of gasoline could be saved in America with some very simple measures. We break it all down and figure out how much gas can be saved with some stupidly simple techniques.

BBC NEWS | Floating wind turbine launched - 0 views

  •
The world's first floating wind turbine is to be towed out to sea this weekend. Statoil's Alexandra Beck Gjorv told the BBC the technology, the Hywind, to be put off Norway's coast - "should help move offshore wind farms out of sight". And it could lead to offshore wind farms eventually being located many miles offshore, away from areas where they cause disruption, Ms Gjorv added. This would benefit military radar operations, the shipping industry, fisheries, bird life and tourism.
