6 MARCH 2017 | GENEVA - More than 1 in 4 deaths of children under 5 years of age are attributable to unhealthy environments. Every year, environmental risks - such as indoor and outdoor air pollution, second-hand smoke, unsafe water, lack of sanitation, and inadequate hygiene - take the lives of 1.7 million children under 5 years, say two new WHO reports.

The world's two largest bottled water companies, Danone and Nestlé Waters, have teamed up with a California startup to develop and launch at commercial scale a PET plastic bottle made from 100 percent biobased material.

Every year an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste are added to the ocean. Without immediate intervention across all points of the pollution pathway, 250 million metric tons of plastic waste could be in the ocean in less than 10 years. The Ocean Conservancy and Trash Free Seas Alliance's new report, The Next Wave, examines some of the solutions and technologies currently available and looks forward to establishing a framework to generate greater collaboration and innovation toward long-term solutions.

VF Corporation has released its first-ever Forest Derived Materials Policy. The company joins over 65 other apparel brands and producers supporting the CanopyStyle initiative, which aims to eliminate the use of ancient and endangered forests in the production of forest derived fabrics such as rayon and viscose from the apparel and fashion industries by the end of 2017.

Leisure travel company Carnival Corporation has installed Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems on 60 ships to cut sulfur emissions across its global fleet. The company has invested $400 million toward the effort to date and plans to install the systems on more than 85 vessels across its fleet through 2020.

Apple released its first Green Bond Impact Report, which highlights 16 projects made possible by proceeds from a $1.5 billion green bond it issued last year. The company allocated approximately $441 million to environmentally beneficial projects in fiscal year 2016, with the majority of funds going toward renewable energy (about $129 million), green building (about $232.6 million), and energy efficiency (about $74.6 million).

Wegmans Food Markets and other grocers, businesses and communities are working with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Agriculture to cut 50% of food waste by 2030. Municipal and state efforts to reduce waste are being accompanied by grocers' food-donation and recycling programs.

Amazon intends to install solar power panels at more than 50 warehouses and distribution centers worldwide, including 15 this year in the US. The company estimated power generation of as much as 41 megawatts of by year's end.

Demand for soy and other crops grown in Bolivia and Brazil may be contributing to a rise in deforestation in the Amazon basin. In Bolivia, for example, estimates are that 865,000 acres of land have been deforested annually since 2011, up from 667,000 acres a year during the previous decade.

Forest destruction accounts for nearly the same amount of global greenhouse gas emissions as the entire global transportation sector and deforestation rates are yet again on the rise. In response, 38 investors representing a half trillion dollars from across the globe have joined Green Century Capital Management to demand that companies reaffirm and extend zero-deforestation commitments specific to Latin America.

Plastics are an important part of the global economy and have many practical applications for everyday life, but their indisputable benefits are significantly outweighed by their environmental drawbacks - namely in regards to ocean pollution. Recognizing the seriousness of the problem, Dell, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and NatureWorks are finding new and innovative ways to tackle plastic pollution both at the source and at end-of-life.

London's Heathrow Airport has unveiled a new sustainability leadership strategy designed to make Heathrow a center of excellence in the aviation industry. The strategy announces ambitious goals to reduce the airport's and the industry's environmental impacts while maximizing economic opportunities throughout the UK. Plans include a new R&D incubator, an ambition for growth from a new runway to be carbon neutral and at least halving the number of late-running departures to reduce noise for local communities.

McDonald's is launching a campaign promoting its sustainable fish farming practices in preparation for the increased number of Filet-o-Fish sandwiches the company sells during Lent. Commercials highlight suppliers' fishing processes in the Gulf of Alaska.

Despite criticism from the administration, several US military leaders plan to continue to push sustainability efforts. The Navy uses gas-electric hybrid warships at sea to reduce fuel usage, and the military produces enough renewable energy to power 286,000 US homes, according to the Department of Defense.

New International Maritime Organisation rules that take effect in 2020 will require cruise ships to reduce their emissions. In advance of these regulations, several cruise companies are already taking steps to reduce their environmental pollution, the Guardian reports.

The citizens of four major European countries think the impacts of climate change such as severe floods and storms are already affecting them, according to a major new polling study. The research dispels the idea that global warming is widely seen as a future problem, and also shows strong support for action to tackle global warming, including subsidies for clean energy and big financial penalties for nations that refuse to be part of the international climate deal signed in Paris in 2015 - as US president Donald Trump has threatened.

With grand speeches, new climate strategies, the offloading of carbon intensive assets and even changes in executive pay structures, the last few weeks have provided some intriguing evidence that oil firms  finally may be starting to take the climate threat seriously.

Many groups define the circular economy in terms of the types of activities and concepts associated with it: the use of new business models, such as leasing; collaboration across supply chains, or using waste as a resource. However, these characterizations ultimately don't tell us what the circular economy actually is because they don't describe its end state: what will the world actually look like when it is "circular"?

A new report by WRI and Waste & Resources Action Programme found that, on average, for every $1 a company invested in food loss and waste reduction-through training programs, providing equipment like scales to quantify food, and improving storage and packaging-they received a $14 return on investment.
