  • Ebola is not spread through the air or by water, or in general, by food.

This statement from the CDC confirms what Dr. Jeff Bethel (OSU) told me; that the Ebola is not airborne as is the flu and SARS.
  • When an infection does occur in humans, the virus can be spread in several ways to others. Ebola is spread through direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes in, for example, the eyes, nose, or mouth) withblood or body fluids (including but not limited to urine, saliva, sweat, feces, vomit, breast milk, and semen) of a person who is sick with Ebolaobjects (like needles and syringes) that have been contaminated with the virusinfected fruit bats or primates (apes and monkeys)

Ebola is spread by direct contact with an infected person's bio (e.g. body fluids). This is an important distinction that many people I talk to are not aware of.

Much of the virulent speculation among the anxiety-based media of pundit TV and Talk Radio involves false claims that Ebola is transmitted airborne or ungrounded speculations that it could easily become so. They should check the science before leaping into political delirium.

Jeff worked at the CDC in the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine. His thoughts on the current Ebola crisis and national reactions are fascinating. See a paper that he co-authored; Waterman SH, Escobedo M, Wilson T, Edelson PJ,, Bethel JW, Fishbein DB. A new paradigm for quarantine and public health activities at land borders: opportunities and challenges. Public Health Reports 2009; 124(2):203-12.
