A healthy dose of scepticism - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
I want my students to be sceptics. I believe that in the present age scepticism is more important than ever. Easy access to information, ease of publishing, scams and confidence tricksters combine to create a climate where blind trust is dangerous for our security, our finances and our knowledge bases. For students of all ages a healthy dose of scepticism is much needed not just so they may reveal falsehoods but to allow them to discover new truths.

Free Technology for Teachers: A Picture is Worth 1,000 Gigabytes: Creating InfoGraphics with Middle School Students - 0 views

  • After finding an InfoGraphic about Factors that go into Choosing a Career for my 7th and 8th grade Career Exploration elective course, I wanted my students to make their own InfoGraphic about their own career interests and map out how they plan to achieve their target career.

I have thought about Infographics in the same way.  Have students do the research and then create the graphic to assess what they have learned.  Assessment comes in many forms, yet a question needs to be answered.  "Is a grade derived from points given as the final description of what a student has learned, is a broad rubric written from the learning goals, or is a describe learning along a continuum?

Language Moves that Encourage Initiative - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Why might it be that our students struggle with independence? Maybe it comes from the language moves we make. As with the language of thinking, being deliberate with our choices can help us to create a classroom culture where students demonstrate independence and initiative.

I've Got It Covered! Creating Magazine Covers to Summarize Texts - ReadWriteThink - 34 views

  • Students can improve their comprehension of content area textbooks by summarizing chapters in the form of magazine covers. The lesson begins by asking students to examine a magazine and discuss the ways in which the magazine cover's headlines and graphics express the main ideas of its articles.
  •
This activity uses the concept of identifying main idea in informational text to create magazine covers. The purpose is comprehension can be enhanced when readers actively relate the ideas presented in print to their own knowledge and experiences and craft visual representations to make meaning.

LiveBinders - Organize your resources in an online binder - 34 views

  •
LiveBinders is dedicated to helping you empower others with the information you work hard to collect. If you're like us, you've used 'creative' tactics to keep track of all your links either through email, word documents or endless lists in your browser bookmarks folder. It's hard to put a group of links together in any meaningful format. And sharing a group of URLs is cumbersome for everyone - the sender and the receiver. Have you ever looked through your bookmarks list and forgotten what they are all for? We created LiveBinders so that you could do with digital information what you do with the papers on your desk - organize them into nice containers - like 3-ring binders on your shelf. With our online-binders you can also upload your documents and easily combine them with your links in a neat and organized way. We welcome you to create as many livebinders as you need to help organize the stuff you collect and share on the Web. Thank you Teachers We have been delighted that teachers are using livebinders as a way to communicate with parents, students, and each other. We could not have done it without the feedback from our launch, and hope LiveBinders will continue to make your digital life easier. We're still fixing bugs and adding features so please keep that feedback coming! Let us know at feedback@livebinders.com. Thanks for your help!
