Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center has created their own interactive website using Google Earth.  You can minipulate the sea surface temperature, sea surface height, chlorophyll levels, and ocean wind speeds.

Students can drag/drop different sea animals around to create their own environment or even to tell a story.

Fabien Cousteau is an aquanaut, just like his grandfather and father. But more than just exploring the oceans to unlock its mystery, Fabien dove the extra mile by launching his Plant A Fish organization. The sound of the recent earthquake in Japan was recorded by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology in Hatsushima. It was processed by LIDO (Listening to the Deep Ocean environment). They sped the sound up by 16X so it would be withing the range of human hearing.

Wow! I live in the Pacific Northwest of Canada, and Georgia Strait shows greater impact than the California Coast. Southern Nova Scotia is a global hot spot. It would make an interesting project to get students working on what factors are contributing to such a high rate of impact off our coasts and what form that is taking. That should be presented to our provincial government as they consider lifitnf the moratorium on offshore drilling.

Against a background of escalating tension between the US and Russia over events in Ukraine, oil companies from each country have been working to overcome the numerous challenges of extracting oil from the Arctic Ocean. Having completed one of the largest Arctic expeditions in history to understand the challenges, the partnership has now started to drill.

Northrop Grumman is developing the MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for the US Navy to provide long-endurance maritime surveillance. The biggest UAS ever operated by the navy, Triton will fly missions of up to 24 hours scouting out large areas of the ocean, working hand-in-hand with the manned Boeing P-8 Poseidon which can fly in for a closer look at targets of interest.
