Looking deeper, however, reveals many pockets of non-consumption where students would be delighted with computer-based learning rather than the alternative, nothing at all. Take Advanced Placement (AP) courses for starters. According to a 2005 report by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), 33 percent of schools nationwide offered no AP classes in 2002–03. Those that do provide AP courses today only offer a fraction of the 34 courses for which AP exams are available, because they lack the resources to hire more AP teachers or there is not enough student demand to justify a dedicated course and teacher.

      I find it a very sad state of affairs in the UK that this article constitutes a story. It has been widely acknowledged amongst child developmentalists that there is going to be a gulf between the sexes at such an age due to the internal developments taking place. Although testing is 'voluntary' in the UK, it is clearly still widespread to accountability purposes. We are talking about 7-year-olds here. What is disappointing also, is the fact further on in the article that a politician sees this as capital to attack the government, rather than the whole 'testing' regime for 7 year olds.

Every time a friend with kids in school tells me textbooks are too generic, I think back to that moment. "Who writes these things?" people ask me. I have to tell them, without a hint of irony, "No one." It's symptomatic of the whole muddled mess that is the $4.3 billion textbook business. Textbooks are a core part of the curriculum, as crucial to the teacher as a blueprint is to a carpenter, so one might assume they are conceived, researched, written, and published as unique contributions to advancing knowledge.

  • To justify their campaign, ed reformers repeat, mantra-like, that U.S. students are trailing far behind their peers in other nations, that U.S. public schools are failing. The claims are specious. Two of the three major international tests—the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study and the Trends in International Math and Science Study—break down student scores according to the poverty rate in each school. The tests are given every five years. The most recent results (2006) showed the following: students in U.S. schools where the poverty rate was less than 10 percent ranked first in reading, first in science, and third in math. When the poverty rate was 10 percent to 25 percent, U.S. students still ranked first in reading and science. But as the poverty rate rose still higher, students ranked lower and lower. Twenty percent of all U.S. schools have poverty rates over 75 percent. The average ranking of American students reflects this. The problem is not public schools; it is poverty. And as dozens of studies have shown, the gap in cognitive, physical, and social development between children in poverty and middle-class children is set by age three.

      Where were all the other educators at the Save Our Schools March?  I am guilty, and feel guilty for having not attended, but really, where were we all?   No, Matt Damon isn't, and shouldn't be our poster child for education reform.  You cannot fault him for representing us and using a naughty word.  Instead of poo-pooing Matt, I applaud his courage to do so, to tell it like it is, and for defending our profession.  I will not put him on a pedestal as if he speaks for me as one of my own, however, he did defended teachers. I appreciate that, a lot.   Don't make this more than what it is, even if you think he did it in a shitty way.
