I know some of you are familiar with this site - some helpful video tutorials on a number of useful software programs, including Final Cut Pro and Photoshop.

For those of us looking for free cloud transcription service! Here's a great review from a KUOW Reporter.... "Register at http://www.voicebase.com, upload your audio, do something else for 10 minutes to an hour or two (the wait varies apparently), and it will do a rough but surprisingly not-bad transcription for you. What I've done is then paste that "machine transcript" into a Word doc (or you can download it) and correct major errors in it as I listen to my original audio. Much faster (and a lot less typing) than trying to log tape from scratch. Voicebase.com lets you do 50 hours of audio transcribing free. I did it for a half-hour interview I'd taped in the studio; I don't know how Voicebase will perform on phone tape, audio with ambient noise behind it, speakers with accents, interviews with more than one person, etc. But for my purposes, it was pretty freaking awesome."

danah boyd is a scholar whose work examines technology, society, and policy. She has produced a lot of great research on the ways in which young people engage in new media. I've recently become aware that she offers a free download of her new book "It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens" on her personal website. I encourage all of you to give it a read if you have time. 

ABSTRACT: Research on the digital and online environment poses several ethical questions that are new or, at least, newly pressing, especially in relation to youth. Established ethical practices require that research have integrity, quality, transparency, and impartiality. They also stipulate that risks to the researcher, institution, data, and participants should be anticipated and addressed. But difficulties arise when applying these to an environment in which the online and offline intersect in shifting ways. This paper discusses some real-life "digital dilemmas" to identify the emerging consensus among researchers. We note the 2012 guidelines by the Association of Internet Researchers, which advocates for ethical pluralism, for minimizing harm, and for the responsibility of the researcher where codes are insufficient. As a point of contrast, we evaluate Markham's (2012) radical argument for data fabrication as an ethical practice. In reflecting on how researchers of the digital media practices of youth resolve their dilemmas in practice, we take up Markham's challenge of identifying evolving practice, including researchers' workarounds, but we eschew her solution of fabrication. Instead, we support the emerging consensus that while rich data are increasingly available for collection, they should not always be fully used or even retained in order to protect human subjects in a digital world in which future possible uses of data exceed the control of the researcher who collected them.

Thanks for posting this, John. Considering the ethical concerns we all have expressed in class, I am sure this article will be helpful. I will be sure to put it on my reading list.

This is an interesting case study on how ethnographic methods are being used by arts and cultural groups to help make their case to funders. "There is growing pressure to provide concrete evidence of impact to funders and institutional and civic leaders. And yet, numbers and metrics rarely capture the complex individual transformation and collective social change at the heart of many impactful community-based arts and humanities-based endeavors. Stories and qualitative data more readily meet the challenge but are often viewed as "soft" evidence. How can we reap the valuable content- and context-rich learning that qualitative approaches to assessment afford, while enhancing the credibility of qualitative evidence toward more effective case making?"

Just to piggy-back off of my last post - I read this piece by Eve Tuck recently and I think it's really powerful. In her letter, Tuck calls on communities, researchers to reconsider the long-term impact of "damage-centered research" - research that seeks to document peoples' pain and brokenness to hold those in power accountable for their oppression." Speaking to Witness' approach, this quote was particularly salient: "It is a powerful idea to think of all of us as litigators, putting the world on trial, but does it actually work? Do the material and political wins come through? And, most importantly, are the wins worth the long- term costs of thinking of ourselves as damaged?"

I am currently on the look out for the best transcribing tool, and here is one of my first finds.

This sounds very interesting. I will be translating and then having to transcribe in both Portuguese and English. If I can dictate the audio through a mic using both languages, that would be fantastic! I definitely want to explore this more and/or have someone look into doing a little teaching session on this!
