After reading about PBL I decided I wanted to explore some ideas out there relating to math. I quickly stumbled upon this resource that has six different projects that are all grounded in math. Choosing an end product with project-based learning can be challenging due to the sheer number of possibilities. To encourage high-level products, it is benificial to know your students' interests and learning styles. We thought it would be helpful to some to jump start the creative process by listing a few project-based learning ideas that we've seen put into action.

Demands on our educational system are changing, and the graduating student profile indicates the need for students with well-developed critical thinking, higher-level thinking, collaborative abilities, learner-centered study emphasis and a budding real-world skillset. Students will be "Never tell people how to do things.

Project-Based Learning requires careful planning on the part of the instructor. Keep in mind unexpected circumstances such as unexpected delays or timing of certain aspects of the project. Making the projects standards-based can solidify the students' understanding of material for which they will be held accountable.

Project-Based Learning is the anchoring of student-driven learning through the design, development, and publication authentic projects, products, and related learning outcomes. It is a forward-way of thinking about how you can plan learning experiences for students while simultaneously centering them in the learning process itself.

This article by Melinda Kolk, supports the same argument about the value an authentic audience can have on learning as the Monica Burns article. What I liked about Kolk's thinking that was different, was the idea of a flexible audience. Different groups may have different audiences based on the information and stakeholders the groups choose. Kolks also stressed the need for not just authentic audiences, but for authentic and real-world problems, which might influence who the audience is. The article suggests focusing on ideas that matter, work that matters, and effort that matters (Move from Projects to Project-Based Learning, 2022).

At TeachThought, we're huge fans of project-based learning. While there is no magic bullet of practice, program, or framework that automatically produces progressive and effective learning, what makes project-based learning exceptional is its flexibility. As it is, first and foremost, simply a curriculum planning tool, so much other "good stuff" that can support learning (game-based learning, learning simulations, place-based education, self-directed learning, etc.)

This is slightly off-center for PBL, but the students love combining simulations with project-based, and this is a really fun way to do it.
