This is a pretty short activity, but I thought it was interesting and relevant. It could be paired with students watching videos of old shuttles, etc.

POGIL | Home - 2 views

  • POGIL uses guided inquiry – a learning cycle of exploration, concept invention and application – as the basis for many of the carefully designed materials that students use to guide them to construct new knowledge.   POGIL is a student-centered strategy; students work in small groups with individual roles to ensure that all students are fully engaged in the learning process. POGIL activities focus on core concepts and encourage a deep understanding of the course material while developing higher-order thinking skills. POGIL develops process skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and communication through cooperation and reflection, helping students become lifelong learners and preparing them to be more competitive in a global market.

I love POGIL and have helped spread the love in my department. My students have really responded positively to having assigned roles which I rotate and randomly assign. The key is really reinforcing those roles every time because it gives control and voice to some kids who would never take it on their own.

How Does Project-Based Learning Work? - 0 views

  •
Project-based learning, as with all lessons, requires much preparation and planning. It begins with an idea and an essential question. When you are designing the project and the essential question that will launch the activities, it is important to remember that many content standards will be addressed.

I really like how this project can fit with many subject areas. A social studies or American history teacher could easily use this.

This project looks like a great way to teach perimeter and area in a relevant and realistic situation. Students will create a subdivision keeping in mind the costs, designs, math, and planning that is a part of the process. They will work with scale drawings of houses, cost breakdown, and subdivision design. This project implements math skills, advertising skills, and writing skills into a interesting and active project.

Can we overcome racism? That is the driving question of this PBL. I am considering a similar driving question (maybe!), and this PBL offered a solid start for me to better understand PBLs.
