Digital natives and digital immigrants - 0 views

  • he Digital Immigrant is the latecomer in the technology revolution and as with any immigrant, there is a certain “accent” that is readily apparent to the native speakers.
  • still try and work around or second guess technology
  • One major difference between Natives and Immigrants is the way we process information.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • Immigrants grew up learning one topic at a time, everything in order, following a linear and logical progression, but Natives do not think that way.
  • Another major difference between Immigrants and Natives is a sense of identity (DigitalNative.org, 2007).  To Digital Immigrants, cell phones, emails, and the Internet are just tools that can be used to reach someone or set up a “real” face-to-face meeting. Natives look at the same technologies and see an extension of who they are.
  • Digital communication is just as real to Natives as face-to-face meetings are to Immigrants.
  • Many Immigrants consider education as the process that forces as much information into students’ heads as possible so they can regurgitate a laundry list of facts at a moment’s notice. Natives donotconsider this an education.
  • Immigrants should be willing to teach Natives how to find important information and put less emphasis on forcing the students to learn exact information.

      Thank you again Wikipedia!
  • a digital native as a person who understands the value of digital technology and uses this to seek out opportunities for implementing it with a view to make an impact.
  • Marc Prensky coined the term digital native in his work Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants published in 2001

another reference to good ol' marc!
  • Due to the obvious divide set between digital natives and digital immigrants, sometimes both generations are forced to meet which commonly results in conflicting ideologies of digital technology. The everyday regime of worklife is becoming more technologically advanced with improved computers in offices, more complicated machinery in industry etc. With technology moving so fast it is hard for digital immigrants to keep up.
  • This creates conflicts among older supervisors and managers with the increasingly younger workforce. Similarly, parents clash with their children at home over gaming, texting, YouTube, Facebook and other Internet technology issues. The Pluralist Generation is made up of digital natives
  • Education, as Marc Prensky states, is the single largest problem facing the digital world as our Digital Immigrant instructors, who speak an outdated language (that of the pre-digital age), are struggling to teach a population that speaks an entirely new language. Immigrants suffer complications in teaching natives how to understand an environment which is "native" to them and foreign to Immigrants. Prensky's own preference to this problem is to invent computer games to teach digital natives the lessons they need to learn, no matter how serious. This ideology has already been introduced to a number of serious practicalities.

digital immigrant as stated by Marc Prensk
  • For example, piloting an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in the army consists of someone sitting in front of a computer screen issuing commands to the UAV via a hand-held controller which resembles (in detail) the model of controllers that are used to play games on an Xbox 360 game console.

  • Not everyone agrees with the language and underlying connotations of the digital native.[
  • The term suggests a familiarity with technology that not all children and young adults who would be considered digital natives have, though some instead have an awkwardness with technology that not all digital immigrants have.
  • A digital native is a person who was born during or after the general introduction of digital technologies and through interacting with digital technology from an early age, has a greater understanding of its concepts.

Are You a Digital Native or a Digital Immigrant? - Big Design Events - 1 views

  • Avoiders. This group consists of people, who are born during the digital age, and do not desire new technology. They are not enamored with Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, or Hulu. For example, I know a 14-year old, who prefers to paint portraits. She owns an iPad, only because her school books are on it. She only watches public television.  She sings in the church choir.  She is very happy. Minimalists. This group is aware that digital technology is a part of their daily life. They choose to interact with only the most interesting things to them personally. For example, I know a young person who does not have a Twitter account and avoids Facebook. She is not a gamer.  She sends emails and downloads books to her Kindle. Enthusiastic Participants. This group is the largest group of Digital Natives. Like their Digital Immigrant cousins the Eager Adopters, Enthusiastic Participants embrace and use all forms of digital technology. This group prefers texting and tweeting over sending out email blasts. They are aware of the latest technology, trends, and tools. Their online and offline lives are blending together.

This is an extrememly accurate definition. They even go so far as to describe a third class of person in between an immigrant and a native. A "Digital Intermediate".
  •
"A digital immigrant is an individual who was born before the widespread adoption of digital technology. The term digital immigrant may also apply to individuals who were born after the spread of digital technology and who were not exposed to it at an early age."

  • What is Digital Literacy? Digital literacy is the ability to find, evaluate, utilize, share, and create content using information technologies and the Internet. As a Cornell student, activities including writing papers, creating multimedia presentations, and posting information about yourself or others online are all a part of your day-to-day life, and all of these activities require varying degrees of digital literacy. Is simply knowing how to do these things enough? No—there’s more to it than that.
