All interactions among students, faculty and administrators should be grounded in clear standards, practices and procedures. Respect. Learning is acknowledged as a participatory process, and a wide range of opinions and ideas is respected. Responsibility. A thriving community demands personal accountability on the part of all members and depends upon action in the face of wrongdoing.

It will require so fast a pace my aim can only be to identify some of the larger shapes I foresee through suggestion and illustration. Careful or detailed development are out of the question. These reflections are divided into five sections. The first and second contain a swift look back, positioning the future of this field against its past. The third identifies, only to finesse, a clutch of important transition issues that either do or ought to concern the participants and stake-holders in the legal information system. Section IV sketches four areas of fundamental change made possible by digital technology. A concluding section (V) suggests a few connections between these observations and the field of artificial intelligence and the law.
