NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Talizha Jones returned from summer vacation after fourth grade to an unwelcome surprise at school: Students would have to stay in class until 4:15 p.m. four days a week. "I was very upset," the now-14-year-old recalled. "I was asking my grandma if I could switch schools."

Mrs. Miller's Kindergarten class got a class set of this company's Hokki stools through a Mariemont Foundation grant. I know this is a commercial school furniture site, but as I read through their design philosophy, I'm really impressed by how learner-centered they are and how the furniture is designed for the kind of learning we're dreaming of. I'm definitely using them for inspiration for the Library Makerspace grant I'm writing.

"We can only teach children core competencies for the 21st century in schools and with teaching methods that are actually designed to achieve the outcomes we need now and in the future. Learning and the learning environment are thus closely connected: It is imperative to create spaces that allow pupils every possible opportunity for self-development."

What's Your Learning Disposition? How to Foster Students' Mindsets | MindShift - 0 views

"Influencing how students view themselves as learners is challenging work. Students often won't respond if a teacher just tells them how they should think - that creates defensiveness. Instead, a good tactic is to teach them some of the neuroscience around learning, including that the brain is malleable."

Is It Project-Based Learning, Maker Education or Just Projects? - 1 views

  •
Zak Malamed of StuVoice.Org mentioned in a student voice panel that when given projects by teachers to complete, it was often just another "thing" to get done, just like a paper or worksheet. I have seen lessons shared by teachers that they called Project-Based Learning, Inquiry Learning, or Maker Education, but upon close examination they...

Where is reflection in the learning process? - 0 views

Today, we finished the second week of an interpersonal communications course. The students in the course are first term college students, a few fresh out of high school. As is my common practice, I end my week of instruction with reflective questions for the students: What was your significant learning this past week?

Why It's Time To Rethink (And Question) Homework - Edudemic - 0 views

  •
The concept of homework as we have known it in the past is changing rapidly, since it often distorts the overall picture of learning. Flipped classrooms, the ability to use the same technology and tools both in and out of the classroom, and personalized learning are making ripples in the education world.
