VS | Ergonomic school furniture - 0 views

Mrs. Miller's Kindergarten class got a class set of this company's Hokki stools through a Mariemont Foundation grant. I know this is a commercial school furniture site, but as I read through their design philosophy, I'm really impressed by how learner-centered they are and how the furniture is designed for the kind of learning we're dreaming of. I'm definitely using them for inspiration for the Library Makerspace grant I'm writing.

"We can only teach children core competencies for the 21st century in schools and with teaching methods that are actually designed to achieve the outcomes we need now and in the future. Learning and the learning environment are thus closely connected: It is imperative to create spaces that allow pupils every possible opportunity for self-development."

What Schools Can Learn From Google, IDEO, and Pixar | Co.Design | business + design - 2 views

  • What would it mean for schools to have a culture centered on design thinking and interdisciplinary projects instead of siloed subjects?
  • There are some schools out there that are doing just that, including High Tech High, an innovative collection of charter schools in Southern California led by lawyer-cum-carpenter-cum-education innovator Larry Rosenstock and a diverse team of adult learners.
  • Schools could be the breeding ground for a new millennium of Renaissance young men and women where creating something trumps memorizing it

The Daring Librarian: Classrom Cribs! Brain Friendly Learning Spaces - 0 views

  • Remember MTV Cribs? We thought, what if that same concept of Cribs...met the classroom! From August 14th to September 14th we’ll be running a challenge that anyone can join. Here’s the details: 1. Rethink your learning space with the student in mind. What changes will enhance the learning experience? 2. Redesign your learning space and show us how you did it: Take pictures and video. 3. Create a 3-min "Cribs" video showing off your new learning space. Include a 250 word (or less) rationale for “why” you made the changes. 4. Submit your video, rationale, and bio to have a chance to be featured on our site and win great prizes!

"Classroom Cribs is our hub for "brain friendly learning spaces". Our mission at Classroom Cribs is to enhance pedagogy and the learning experience with brain-based classroom designs that students will love. And that is the main point. We can (and should) create better learning environments for our students. Spaces that are centered around research and what works."

Chairs and Tables: The Classroom Technology That Could Help Students - US News - 7 views

Redesigned learning spaces can engage students and faculty members, research says. New research shows classroom layout and furniture can positively impact student engagement. What if the key to boosting student engagement was as simple as swapping out desks and chairs and rearranging the layout of a classroom? -- isn't this cool? MB

LOVE this! Think EV and I are going to apply for a "Make it Happen" grant this year to re-think our classroom furniture.
