Place Out Of Time is a simulation of a trial, where students play guests who come from a range of places and times throughout history to discuss some of the great issues of humankind. Our trial takes place (virtually) at the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. Place Out of Time is a writing intensive project for middle and high school students, meant to draw upon their sense of play and the hook of having an audience for their ideas to engage them in putting a twist on the study of history. Student participants and university mentors debate issues and perspectives in character, and move from reading and studying about their characters to a series of opportunities for original research--both historical and creative--as they decide what their character would say about issues that took place in places far distant (in time and geography) from their lives.

My activity on my blog as well as on Twitter have diminished as of late. I still find an incredible amount of value/entertainment by engaging in the online discussions, I just find it harder to make time to write and send out 140 character tidbits.  

More time can be given for assistance if warranted or extensions if the concept is demonstrated as mastered.

I have started to think about how to help students understand the importance of critically evaluating the information on-line. I have found a few sites over the years and after the year 8 immersion days I believe that it is time to come up with some lessons that teachers can use. The flipped classroom, as it is currently being described and publicized, is simply recording the didactic content information via video, having students view these as homework, and then using class time to further discuss these ideas. A few months ago I helped a friend win the Pepsi Refresh Challenge, which gave $25,000 to one of my favorite music associations, the Associate of Redlands Bowl. The following month he did it again, this time at the $50K level. The basic idea is that there is strength in numbers. So TwHistory has teamed up with other groups to form an alliance by supporting each others' projects.

Letterpop is a service that allows you to easily create online newsletters with text and images and several pages. It offers a free plan with which you can publish up to 10 newsletters. You do need to create an account. You can take a screen shot of the newsletter so that you do not have to publish it. We were also able to have 18 people logged into one account at the same time. There is a feature that allows you to send out the newsletters to an email list. (if you publish them).
