Are they talking about a keyboard such as one on a smartphone or iPad? Not sure...
  • Technology is a challenge that teachers and parents alike must face head on; no matter how unfamiliar they are with nuances of the digital world.

It is only ONE way of engaging. And just because you have technology doesn't mean it's ENGAGING. I have found that over a long period of technology integration you might experience the "too much of a good thing" syndrome.
  • Has the “reference” section of the library become a virtual non-entity?
    • Shelly Eaton

Yes, they are! Reference section is not longer in NH library. This brought up discussion if we should or should not teach the basics.
    • Peggy Beal

Traditional reference areas were to assure that references were available for students doing research in the library. Research & reference materials are readily available online.

I still have one but it is not used because it quickly becomes outdated. Internet and databases are much better.
  • what about teachers?

I think that teachers need to realize that phones are not "BAD" that they are devices they can teach with. I think that in 5 years they will be using them in the classroom not taking them from them.
  • But kids today get technology
  • He or she is no longer the center of attention as the dispenser of information, but rather plays the role of facilitator by setting project goals and providing guidelines and resources, moving from student to student or group to group, providing suggestions and support for student activity. As students work on their technology-supported products, the teacher rotates through the room, looking over shoulders and suggesting resources that might be used.

  • teachers today must learn, too

Teachers are uneasy about more "new stuff" for them to learn and implement.
  • They’re thinking about information, making choices and executing skills — as opposed to a typical teacher-led lesson where even the best and brightest might sit in silence. More so than ever before, students are in a position to define their goals, make their own decisions and evaluate their progress.

Teaching kids to be 'digital citizens' (not just 'digital natives') - The Answer Sheet ... - 1 views

  •
"I often hear adults describing today's young people as "digital natives," usually with a tone of resignation or acceptance: "They are so far ahead of us, but we can turn to them for help," is the general message I hear. My reaction is "Whoa there, Nellie," because to me that kind of thinking smacks of abdication of adult responsibility. Yes, most young people know more than we adults because the fast-changing world of modern technology is alien to us, wildly different from the one we grew up in. But being a "digital native" is not the same as being a "digital citizen.""

Jennette McCurdy's "Chicken" Commercial for Safe Kids USA - YouTube - 0 views

"Tool Director Harry Cocciolo and Nickelodeon Creative Advertising collaborate to deliver an urban twist on the age-old joke "Why did the chicken cross the road?" for Nickelodeon. This time around it's a joke with a sobering punch-line. As cell phones, mp3 players and text messaging become greater distractions to pedestrians and drivers alike, Nickelodeon has teamed up with Safe Kids USA to launch a new campaign aimed at making kids aware of the dangers of technological distractions. Chicken opens with a cool hen strutting down a city street as it pumps the latest jam in its headphones. When the bird fails to notice the "Don't Walk" sign flashing at the intersection, it continues to cross into oncoming traffic and meets a "fowl" demise. The message is clear and humorously executed by Cocciolo. It doesn't matter why the chicken crosses the road, what truly matters is that its paying attention. So when walking in the city, take off your headphones, stop texting while walking and get off your phone. Paying attention saves lives."
