"The Best Resources For Learning Research & Citation Skills September 24, 2009 by Larry Ferlazzo | 8 Comments This "The Best…" list is sort of a combination of two lists I had been thinking of making to go along with The Best Online Resources To Teach About Plagiarism (Another list to keep in mind might be The Best Reference Websites For English Language Learners - 2008). The more I thought about it, though, the more I felt that a list of engaging (and even fun) sites to teach research skills and accessible citation resources would make a good combination. Since a graduation requirement in our district is that seniors need to develop a "Senior Project," I've spent some time finding these kinds of helpful sites that might be accessible to English Language Learners.  I have to say, though, that these sites (except for the first one) would probably only be accessible to more advanced ELL's. Sharing this again as there have been some additions to that that I think will be very helpful for teachers grades K-8.

The National Science Digital L ibrary is the nation's online libdrary for education and research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It provides free math lessons and activities aligned with the Math Common Core Standards, as well as STEM-related blogs and other free teacher resources and lesson plan ideas. Targeted for K-12 teachers, higher-education professionals, and librarians, NSDL also provides science literay maps and ITunes multimedia files.

"The Graphic Map is designed to assist teachers and students in reading and writing activities. The organizer focuses on charting the high and low points related to a particular item or group of items, such as chapters in a book, amounts of money spent, events during a day, month, year, or life, or scenes in a play. Fact Monster is a reference tool with fact-filled articles for elementary school students. It combines an almanac, atlas, dictionary, encyclopedia, and a homework helper. The site is owned by Pearson Education, the largest educational publisher in the world.

Shmoop, a publisher of digital educational resources, has added pre-algebra to its list of free learning guides. The online Pre-Algebra Learning guides contain hundreds of topics with succinct explanations, diagrams, interactive examples, practice problems, and real-world applications. Pre algebra is Shmoop's first foray beyond its core humanities offerings. At the home page click on the pre algebra tab

Encyclopedia of the Earth an electronic reference about the Earth, its natural environmetns, and their interaction with society. It is a free, fully searchable collection of articles written by scholars, professionals, educators, and experts who collaborate and review each other's work. The articles are written in non-technical language and are useful to students, educators, scholars, and professionals, as well as to the general public.

At a quick glance this site appears to have a lot of information about a variety of science related topics.

This site contains links to a variety of cyber bulling resources.

Site for students with sites approved by educators.

Quintura for Kids is a search engine for kids that acts a bit like a tag cloud in that results can be embedded in a site.

Middlespot is an innovative web site for social bookmarking that allows users to collect sites in a visual way. This would be a great tool for teachers to organize content appropriate web sites and then share them with their students.

There are tons of resources for kids on this National Geographic for Kids site.

Easy to use tool. Great for students who are writing citations and helplful for teachers in grad classes who are writing papers that require citations.
