"The Best Resources For Learning Research & Citation Skills September 24, 2009 by Larry Ferlazzo | 8 Comments This "The Best…" list is sort of a combination of two lists I had been thinking of making to go along with The Best Online Resources To Teach About Plagiarism (Another list to keep in mind might be The Best Reference Websites For English Language Learners - 2008). The more I thought about it, though, the more I felt that a list of engaging (and even fun) sites to teach research skills and accessible citation resources would make a good combination. Since a graduation requirement in our district is that seniors need to develop a "Senior Project," I've spent some time finding these kinds of helpful sites that might be accessible to English Language Learners.  I have to say, though, that these sites (except for the first one) would probably only be accessible to more advanced ELL's. stopy bullying now is a site for kids and adults about bullying. It includes information about bullying and what you can do. It has games related to bullying to teach students how to handle bullying situations. There are webisodes to help teach kids about bullying.

You can see how the planets rotate, you can see the constellations, it is a great visual for teaching astronomy and for teaching about the planets and solar system.

This is a free teaching resource from studyladder. This collection focuses on the Rio Olympics. There are many classroom activities to choose from.

Mathtrain.TV is a free educational "kids teaching kids" project from Mr. Marcos & his students at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, CA. It provides student-created math video lessons all in one place.

The nonprofit Buck Institute for Education and Boise State University have put together resources to help educators plan, design, and implement such leassons. Guides and planning tools are available, as are a handful of examples of project-based teaching and learning strategies that have been successful in the classroom.

Grandpa Tucker's Rhymes and Tales feature a collection of short, silly poems and online humorous stories written in verse for elementary school kids. the site also offers holiday poems and tips and materials for teaching poetry in the rhyme time fun section. Teachers can print out the poetry to use in their own classrooms.

This is a wikispace link to the American Treasures Box. The students. The LIU 12 in collaboration with Waynesburg University's Teaching with Primary Sources program is now offering American Treasures Boxes and digital resources, each based on a specific topic from American history. The American treasures boxes consist of a resource CD/flash drive, printed documents and images from the Library of Congress and ideas about how you might incorporate the materials into your classroom. Illuminations provides a set of free standardbased resources designed to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics for all students.

Digital Footprint

A new public television show designed to teach children basic financial literacy. It covers personal finance topics, such as credit, saving, budgeting, investing, and charity. Free lesson plans are available online for each show. The program will air on public television stations around the United States.

Maps 101 appears to not be free but has a trial version. ti appears to be K-12. It includes materials for Spanish language educators and those teaching students with limited English. I couldn't find information on the purchase but I did see that you can request an extension on the trial version.

Free worksheets on a variety of topic for language arts (reading and writing, grammar, spelling phonics, handwriting) as well as math, science and social studies. There are also brain teasers and teacher helper tools such as award certificates, teaching tips, etc. In addition, there are holiday worksheets. This site would be great for differentiated activities. In a quick preview I saw they had worksheets that were of the same topic areas but they has easy and harder options available. This would be another good site to share with parents.
