National Interprofessional Healthcare Conference 29 - 30 September 2014 | Metro Toronto Convention Centre

Ensuring sustainable primary healthcare across Canada: Embedding interprofessional models and overcoming barriers to collaborative practice. The inaugural National Interprofessional Healthcare Conference will bring together key policy leads and management professionals from primary care networks to discuss strategies to help strengthen interdisciplinary team models.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Taming of the Queue 2015 conference, to be held April 16-17, 2015 in Ottawa, at the Fairmont Château Laurier Hotel.

The 2015 conference will build on the successful previous conference theme of appropriateness by focusing on strategies to improve timely access to appropriate care for complex care patients in an ageing society. This examination will include highlighting successes and challenges experienced by Canadian and international health system stakeholders to manage patients with complex care needs including multi-morbidities. Taming of the Queue invitational conferences provide a forum for leaders, researchers, health care providers, administrators, students and patient groups to come together to discuss and learn about key issues on improving timely access to quality health services. The conferences have contributed to enhancing knowledge and facilitating the exchange of best practices. The Taming of the Queue Conference Steering Committee extends an invitation to health care providers, students, researchers and others interested in improving timely access to care to present a poster at the 2015 Conference in Ottawa on Thursday April 16th, 2015. Additional information related to the poster exhibit will follow. Plans are also underway for a pre-conference wait-time workshop with detailed information to follow. William Charney, a Seattle-based consultant and author of “Epidemic of Medical Errors and Hospital Acquired Infections: Systemic and Social Causes,” along with the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions, is holding a one-day conference on June 4th in Toronto

The conference will address some of the biggest contributors to the systemic and social causes of the epidemic of medical errors and HAIs in the US and Canada.

Along with William Charney, a 30-year expert as a health and safety officer in healthcare, speakers include: Joe and Terry Graedon, Kathleen Bartholomew, and Michael Hurley, the president of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions/CUPE (OCHU)

The potion was tested on scraps of skin taken from mice infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This is an antibiotic-resistant version of the bacteria that causes styes, more commonly known as the hospital superbug MRSA. The potion killed 90 per cent of the bacteria. Vancomycin, the antibiotic generally used for MRSA, killed about the same proportion when it was added to the skin scraps.

he Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) mini conference will combine a review of the pension plan’s benefits conducted by HOOPP staff. This session will give activists new insight into how benefits are calculated, and the special provisions related to employee disability and the buy-back of past service, among others.HOOPP staff will be available to answer questions.The afternoon will be spent looking at the plan’s current and projected financial balance sheet and discussing possible pension plan improvements. Going into the premiers' conference, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said health care would be on the agenda but the focus would be on how to keep the system sustainable with the fiscal pressures of an aging population.

Natalie Mehra, director of the Ontario Health Coalition, said publicly funded health care should be an important topic of discussion because the provincial and territorial leaders don't have another meeting before the federal Health Accord ends in 2014."The (Stephen) Harper government refuses to meet with the premiers. There are no First Ministers meetings," Mehra said. "And what hangs in the balance is nothing less than $36 billion worth of funding... this is a vital issue to all Canadians."
