Why I don't believe people who say they loathe Islam but not Muslims | Andrew Brown - 0 views

  •
It is a trope among people who loathe and fear Islam that their fear and loathing has nothing in common with racism because Islam is not a race, the implication being that hating Muslims is rational and wise whereas hating black people is deeply irrational and stupid. Very relevant topic to my Research project, really brings home why people who have a prejudice towards Islam make tolerant people uncomfortable. Hopefully this article can influence others who feel the need to express their hatred for a religion they don't know much about.

Islamophobia: Understanding Anti-Muslim Sentiment in the West - 0 views

  •
This gallup poll provides statistics on Isalmapobia in the United States. All of these statistics really show an inside look at how many Americans view Muslim people. A lot of the hate or fear surrounding Islam is due to a lack of accurate portrayal in areas such as news outlets or even film and television.

After Raising the Stakes, Is Turkey's Erdogan Out of Options in Syria? - 0 views

  •
The conflicting interests of the US in Syria continued. Turkey hates the Kurds, but the US is using them to fight ISIS, despite them being terrorists in the eyes of their ally. This makes it sound like Erdogan is growing defiant and may provoke action by the US.

Why is Middle Eastern culture missing from Israeli schoolbooks? - Al-Monitor: the Pulse... - 0 views

  • In September 2015, “Faith and Redemption” caused an uproar in Israel as another example of the exclusion of Mizrahi culture and history from the Israeli curriculum.
  • From Shriki's perspective, the place of Mizrahi authors and thinkers in the Israeli curriculum is critical.
  • Gideon Saar, Naftali Bennett's predecessor as education minister, struggled with this same issue in 2012, when the Libi Bamizrach coalition sent him a letter protesting the exclusion of Mizrahi history, literature and cultural heritage from the curriculum.

  • ne pages, out of a total of 400 pages, that deal with the history of Jews from Islamic lands in a textbook on the “history of the Jewish people in recent generations.” The book was used in Israeli schools for many years. Two years later, Yehuda Shenhav, a professor from Tel Aviv University, surveyed textbooks in Israel and found that not only was the scope of discussion of Jews from Islamic lands meager, its representation was erroneous and stereotypical.
  • This long checklist calls for a deep and significant change within the Israeli educational system. It also suggests that Bennett's initiative, much like earlier ones, hardly guarantees that such change will indeed take place.
  •
In the Middle East there is a lack of focus on culture in education. it focuses on the history of the "winners" and is promoting hate and ignorance in the education system. These issues have popped up before the Minister of Education since 1997.

Censorship - 1 views

  •
I hate censorship. But I also love my life. My freedom, and my physical safety. These are the contradictions that any non-commercially minded artist has to carry with them into the boxing ring, if they find themselves wanting to create controversial taboo-busting work in the Arab world.

OPEC and oil prices: Leaky barrels | The Economist - 1 views

  • OPEC, which produces about a third of the world’s daily consumption of 90m barrels of crude oil

  • the country will produce 14m barrels a day (b/d) next year, on a par with Saudi Arabia
  • Iraqi oil exports, stricken by the war and its aftermath, are also set to increase.
  • Libya could be another source of production: its exports have collapsed to only a few hundred thousand barrels a day, against 1.6m in June last year.
  • OPEC’s best hope is continued American protectionism. Any easing of the restrictions on the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) or crude will exert more downward pressure on the oil price.
  • But that would cede market share to their hated rivals, Iran and Iraq.
  • America’s domestic production of crude (and gas, which displaces some oil) is rocketing.

This article briefly addresses the current global petroleum market, outlining the top national producers and their current import/export strategies. The article is a good overview of the global politcs affecting oil prices.

Israel Founded on the Back of a Hate Crime - 0 views

  •
In this Times of Israel article, a statement made by South Africa's ruling party, the ANC, is examined. Made in protest to a planned meeting of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, the ANC's statement accused Israel of being a state founded in apartheid. More dramatically, the article references a quote made by the ANC where they liken Israel's most recent attack on Gaza to the Nazis.
