Our Story | Young Audiences - 0 views

"Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts Center (YAWAC) is Georgia's leading provider of arts-in-education programming. Part of the prestigious 31-chapter national Young Audiences organization, YAWAC brings the power of live arts experiences to Georgia students from pre-school to high school. From a small organization of nine artists in 1983, YAWAC is celebrating more than 25 years of service and has grown into a force in arts education, with more than 65 professional roster artists and ensembles that reach nearly 640,000 students each year in 50 counties statewide. We fulfill our mission - to transform the lives and learning of young people through the arts - by providing a dazzling and culturally diverse array of curriculum-based assemblies, workshops and residencies in music, dance, theatre, literary and visual arts. From Chinese dance to Russian gypsy folk music, from fabric collage to classic fables, YAWAC offers children a world of possibilities for learning through the arts."

Geo Learning: Making a Difference in Geo-Literacy - ArcNews Fall 2009 Issue - 0 views

"Psychologists who study mood have found that your sense of control over external events plays a big role in determining your mood. I believe this explains why so few people choose to get involved in education. In a set of classic psychological studies, researchers observed that feeling unable to control events is associated with a depressed mood. How does this apply to education? When most of us look at the shortcomings of our educational system, we feel little power to influence events. We do not feel that we can make a difference. That's depressing, so we tend to turn away and devote our energies to something where we can feel what psychologists call internal locus of control. It doesn't have to be that way. There are many things that we can do to improve education, particularly if we focus on the areas where we can make a difference. For the GIS community, the place where we can make a difference is in the area that I call geo-literacy, the slice across the science and social studies curriculum that depends critically on geographic analysis. Together with ESRI and other organizations, National Geographic is creating opportunities for geographic professionals to make a difference in education and experience an internal locus of control."

My Wonderful World -- About the Campaign - 0 views

  •
My Wonderful World is a National Geographic-led campaign-backed by a coalition of national business and non-profit organizations-to expand geographic learning in school, at home, and in communities. We want to give kids the power of global knowledge. Since the campaign launched, more than 80,000 people like you have signed up to show their support. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Geography is more than places on a map. It's global connections. People and cultures. Economics and environments. Our young people need to know geography in order to understand today's world-and succeed in tomorrow's. But they're not getting enough of it, in or out of school. A National Geographic-Roper survey shows half of young Americans can't locate world powers like Japan and India. Twenty percent can't even find the Pacific Ocean. Without geography, our children aren't ready for the world. With your help, we can make geography education a priority. Kids who understand our world today can succeed in it tomorrow.
