Deaf Restaurant - 0 views

  •
Since we are focusing on signs from restaurants I thought it would be interesting to see if there are any restaurants owned by or for the deaf. Then I found this article about a place in San Francisco that sells pizza. Enjoy.
  •
That's a really cool article! I hope they make!! I'm not sure how big the deaf community is in SF, but hopefully it's enough to keep them going. I wish more hearing ppl would eat there. Next time I'm in SF I will stop by.

Very cool, Rebecca! That's my old neighborhood. I'll make sure to hit it when I'm back.

Online ASL full Dictionary - This site has many various dictionaries from what we have for class to parents waning to learn sign language for their babies. "Free Sign Language Dictionary Prior to the development of sign language, deaf individuals often found it difficult to communicate with those who can hear and vice versa. Sign language changed all that, creating a solid and reliable form of communication for use in the deaf community."

Cinemas are letting deaf people down | Charlie Swinbourne | Comment is free | guardian.... - 0 views

  •
This article is about the difficulties deaf ppl have going to the movie theater. Many theaters don't have CC so deaf ppl can't go to new releases. Some theaters advertise they have CC but apparently it rarely works so many deaf ppl go home disappointed. I guess this is just another hurdle deaf ppl have to overcome that many of the hearing population doesn't even think twice about.

Deaf Greeting Cards, Note Cards and Deaf Greeting Card Templates - 0 views

I had a hard time finding true deaf ecards. I was hoping to see animated deaf ecards that actually had a character signing. This is the best site I could find. All of the cards are static and there is nothing on the inside.I think Hallmark has not realized that most deaf ppl can't read.

This site is devoted to deaf videos. Most are just youtube style videos that people make. It's amazing how fast some of the people sign. It seems impossible to ever be able to understand what they are signing, but I suppose it's just like learning any new language...with time and practice it becomes easier.

Philosophy's real-world consequences for being deaf - 0 views

  •
This is a bit dense in vocabulary since it's a philosophical piece, but it's very informative about the ways philosophy has suppressed the deaf by having inaccurate assumptions of what the deaf experience is like. The author aims to dispel those assumptions. Requires some mental yoga.

Deaf Children Worldwide - development arm of NDCS - East Africa - 0 views

  •
According to this site, worldwide, there around 20 million deaf children, 80% of whom live in developing countries. In India alone, there are 3 million deaf children. This org is an international development arm of the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS). This side provides info on their outreach in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. It's eye opening to read about deaf issues from an international perspective. Example: the UN's Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Article 23 gives children with disabilities equal rights with respect to family life and states that children should not be separated from his or her parents on the basis of a disability. Interesting view into how other cultures approach deafness.
