According to this site, worldwide, there around 20 million deaf children, 80% of whom live in developing countries. In India alone, there are 3 million deaf children. This org is an international development arm of the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS). This side provides info on their outreach in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. It's eye opening to read about deaf issues from an international perspective. Example: the UN's Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Article 23 gives children with disabilities equal rights with respect to family life and states that children should not be separated from his or her parents on the basis of a disability. Interesting view into how other cultures approach deafness.

If you like poems you should read my site which has really interesting poems written by the deaf. "American Sign Language University" at Lifeprint.com is a site for ASL students and teachers. It helps a person find information and resources to help improve their signing. It includes free self-study lessons including an ASL dictionary, signing videos, a printable sign language alphabet chart, fingerspelling help, Deaf Culture study materials, 100 first signs for parents to teacher their child, and resources to help a person learn sign language.

I had a hard time finding true deaf ecards. I was hoping to see animated deaf ecards that actually had a character signing. This is the best site I could find. All of the cards are static and there is nothing on the inside.I think Hallmark has not realized that most deaf ppl can't read.

This is a bit dense in vocabulary since it's a philosophical piece, but it's very informative about the ways philosophy has suppressed the deaf by having inaccurate assumptions of what the deaf experience is like. The author aims to dispel those assumptions. Requires some mental yoga.

Language, Culture and Pride

This is a site about Mexican Sports Organizations for the Deaf. It is a site where the Deaf of Mexico can easily find resources for schools and sports/sporting events, as well as communicate to one another about these things. The site is in Spanish, but I know with Google Chrome there is the option to translate it into English.

'Life & Deaf' is a unique Speech & Language Therapy project, in which Deaf children explore their identity through poetry in written English and British Sign Language. 'Life & Deaf' aims to develop children's communication skills, their sense of identity and their self-esteem, all essential for good mental health.

As the first known sign­ing Deaf woman to receive a doc­tor­ate in phi­los­o­phy, Teresa Burke faced unique chal­lenges that she turned into unique oppor­tu­ni­ties. She grad­u­ated from UNM last week.
