Lesson over spreadsheets....."On what day was I born?" - 0 views

  • On What Day Was I Born? Find What Day of the Week You Were Born On in Excel 2007

I like this because its fairly simple to use for a lesson. Students in the second grade need to take baby steps and this lesson is perfect for that. It lets you dive into Excel slowly to understand how to use a spreadsheet. This is perfect because I was one of those kids who had a hard time using spreadsheets

Tips On Blogging With Students | The Edublogger - 0 views

  • I have found edublogs so user friendly for my students and my parents. I use virtual participation for my incredibly shy students or for students that just want to extend the conversation. I was very surprised how many students blogged for the sake of wanting to participate in an intelligent conversation.

I really like the idea of virtual participation, not just for the students, but for the parents also. In the virtual age we live in, how great would it be for a parent to be able to log onto the class blog to keep up with news!

I believe that blogs would be a good resource to use for students who are shy. It allows them to speak publicly about their opinions, but not everyone will know who they are if they don't use their real name, which should minimize their hesitation to speak their mind.

This is a great idea for students who are nervous or shy to participate. I know a lot of students often will not share with the teacher or peers because they are shy or nervous to get the wrong answer. Here the teacher is able to evaulate the students understanding of the curriculm and students can share with their peers without feeling the pressure.
  • The feedback I have been getting from my students about our classroom blog has been excellent. Students enjoy making comments on the blog and some of the parents of these 17-18 year old students enjoy reading them. These students who need extra support and are often reluctant to put pen to paper are quite willing to post comments on the blog. Their fingers just fly over the keys. It’s amazing. They also like the fact that I put some security on the blog- first names only, no search engine access and moderated comments.

I've started to notice even in college that student's love to use the computer to put in their feedback to something. I think students love to type rather then pulling out a pencil and writing it down on paper. This is great for students because it allows them to do something different from the regular classroom. It allows them to use technology instead of the old fashion way of doing things! I love the fact that the this teacher has put some security on the blog because along with the students, teachers, and parents, we want everyone to feel safe when blogging.

  • Two students have asked me not to publish a specific comment they have written and that’s not a problem. The students wanted to write the comments, but did not want them published. That’s not a problem at all.

After reading all the information on blogging, I never thought of those students that would be shy to post their opinions. I think that it is great that blogs can be posted as private where only the instructor can see it. It's convenient that we have the option to blog at our own individual comfort level.
  • The students like the fact that the two classes share one blog and that they can read and comment on what their friends have written. Several parents of these 17/18 year old students have told me they like the blog as well. They follow it too.

This makes learning more fun for students when they get to interact with their friends. I think this is a great idea that both classes get to interact with each other. The students will want to share more when they are getting to share with their peers.
  • I work with student that are on Out Of School Suspension. Most of my student are out of school for a some of 45 days. My goal is to set up a better communication with the students and their teachers and their class peers. There are some teachers that are blogging with their class at our school. I really think that is great. These student are able to go to their teachers blog site and get their assignments and they can respond to the work that is posted and publish their own work and the teacher can respond to them.

I really like they way the childs identiy is kept a secret. For the safety of children, there would be no way for a cybercriminal to get a hold of any personal information.

I like this lesson, because the students can use it to poll whatever they want as a group. They will be able to put the information from their class into a graph.
  •
I think this is very interesting because it uses things students are interested in. Graphs are a good way for students to visualize what they are trying to say and understand.

I chose this website because it offers several examples of how to incorporate spreadsheets in the classroom. I also liked the fact that it offered tips when using excel. This website is perfect for teachers starting out, because it offers examples of spreadsheets.
