  • The announcement today of the creation of the Terra do Meio (Land in the Middle) reserve, which will cover about 9.8 million acres, in the National Park and Ecological Station, will be complemented next week by the protection of an additional 7.4 million acres of sustainable development reserves, largely for traditional forest communities.  The protection plan signals the government's intention to exert control over one of the most lawless and violent regions in the Amazon frontier.
  • Creating the proposed mosaic of reserves in the Terra do Meio will do more than just protect an area about the size of Maine, which is currently suffering heavy invasion from land grabbers.  The reserves will also link two existing groups of indigenous territories, resulting in the creation of the largest continuous corridor - nearly 62 million acres, about the size of the United Kingdom - of protected tropical forest in the world.

  • The proposal for creation of the reserve mosaic was originally formulated by the grassroots Movement for the Development of the Transamazon and the Xingu (MTDX), a coalition of small farmers along the Transamazon highway.
  • The farmers also fear that more deforestation, as soy farming and cattle ranching expand, will reduce rainfall and cut crop yields

A Scientist Working to Improve Lives Through Conservation: Conservation International - 0 views

  • Rosimeiry Portela: A Scientist Working to Improve Lives Through Conservation
  • Portela is always looking to social components for models of conservation, noting the differences in Brazilian and Finnish conservation efforts. Brazilians, for example, are increasingly aware of environmental issues, but development concerns are still at the forefront of their political agenda, and inequality remains one of the worst in the world. “There is very little inequality in Finland and a high level of agreement among politicians for conservation,” says Portela.

The Environmental Literacy Council has been dedicated to helping teachers, students, policymakers, and the public find cross-disciplinary resources on the environment. An independent, 501(c)3 organization, the Council offers free background information on common environmental science concepts; vetted resources to broaden understanding; and curricular materials that don't tell teachers how to teach, but give them the tools to augment their own backgrounds - no matter what their current knowledge.

GLOBE at Night - 0 views

"GLOBE at Night is an annual citizen-science campaign that encourages people all over the world to record the brightness of their night sky. For two weeks every March, when the Moon is not out during the early evening and the constellation of Orion can be seen by everyone everywhere, children and adults match the appearance of Orion with 7 star maps of progressively fainter stars found on the website, www.globeatnight.org. They then submit their measurements (e.g., which star map they chose) on-line with their date, time and location."
