A lot of the "MP3″ legal concern is over MP3 encoding or decoding technology, but the patents also affect the distribution of the .mp3 file itself. Emusic.com is just one of many who pay a patent royalty for the distribution of it's MP3s. But what about educational institutions? For instance, MIT OCW uses MP3 technology for compression of audio lectures; do they pay off Thomson for each file?

Listen Button What is RSS? RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. It's a computer protocol for distributing news headlines and articles on the Web. This is a method by which web content can be distributed automatically to subscribers each time they are refreshed. This allows users to subscribe to content and then view it on an RSS reader, which aggregates the latest feeds in a single application without revisiting each individual website. Odiogo takes an existing textual RSS feed and creates a new one, identical to the original one, enriched with an audio file for each piece of content. RSS feeds can be viewed and listened to with RSS readers such as FeedDemon, or FeedReader or through personalized Homepage/RSS reader services such as My Yahoo!, Netvibes or Pageflakes. With an MP3 player or an iPod one would use podcast management tools such as Apple's iTunes or iPodder.

Microblogging is a new form of communication in which users can describe their current status in short posts distributed by instant messages, mobile phones, email or the Web. Twitter, a popular microblogging tool has seen a lot of growth since it launched in October, 2006. In this paper, we present our observations of the microblogging phenomena by studying the topological and geographical properties of Twitter's social network. We find that people use microblogging to talk about their daily activities and to seek or share information. Finally, we analyze the user intentions associated at a community level and show how users with similar intentions connect with each other.

Quality Matters created a set of forty specific elements, distributed across eight broad standards, by which to evaluate the design of online and hybrid courses. The goal of HippoCampus is to provide high-quality, multimedia content on general education subjects to high school and college students free of charge. HippoCampus was designed as part of Open Education Resources (OER), a worldwide effort to improve access to quality education for everyone. HippoCampus content has been developed by some of the finest colleges and universities in the world and contributed to the National Repository of Online Courses (NROC), another MITE project. NROC makes editorial and engineering investment in the content to prepare it for distribution by HippoCampus. Both HippoCampus and NROC are supported by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
