Much attention has been paid to how mobile-learning devices can be incorporated into middle and high schools, but Seth Weinberger is targeting a different set of students: kindergartners through 2nd graders. "The sweet spot of literacy is kindergarten to 2nd grade," says Weinberger, the executive director of Innovations for Learning, the Evanston, Ill.-based nonprofit organization that developed a mobile-learning device called the TeacherMate. "If you get them [reading on grade level] early, there's a real chance that you can keep them at grade level."

This was a difficult newsletter to write this week because I am torn. Many educators just use the favorites menu on their computer either at work or home. But what about when we're at home and need to get to a site we saved at school? This is where social bookmarking comes in! Bookmarking favorite links on the internet is something that can make life easier for us as educators - it means that it's easy to find a really neat site later when looking for it. Putting SOCIAL in Bookmarking The social part of social bookmarking works like this: you can share your links that you've saved through a service like Diigo with anyone else who uses Diigo. You can also use Diigo to see the interesting links that your friends and other people bookmark - this can be extremely useful for a team of teachers who like to share teaching resources. You can even search Diigo to find the many bookmarks that others have saved - it helps sort out the good sites, which is hard to do on most search engines. There is nothing more powerful than information. It is what makes the world go around. However, ever so often, information in itself gets a little stale and needs a creative shake to look attractive again. Infographics does just that. This is especially true in a classroom with students whose attention span seems to be reducing by the day.

We built Noteflight because we looked at where software is today, and saw that applications for writing music were stuck in the past. We wanted to accomplish a few important goals: Make it easy to create and share written music online. People who make music -- amateurs and professionals, students and teachers -- want to share that music with others, sooner or later. But most software for working with notated music treats the Internet as an afterthought: it's geared to saving your music on your own computer's hard disk, not to sharing your music with other people. It's painful to share musical scores online today, and as software inventors, we knew how much better it could be. People expect to be able to do their creative work wherever they go, and a crop of new browser-based applications make it incredibly easy to create and publish word-processing documents or spreadsheets online. We feel musical documents should be just as accessible. Empower developers to build a new world of musical and educational applications.
